[Max] I need help! / Re: Roughness Modulation
« on: Yesterday at 18:41:31 »
Please share your results from using this feature, we are very curious!
Also, here is our help center explaining what it is and how it works:

Looks like we missed the information about the converter script, so we will add it asap! :)

At the beginning of the lesson Nejc says that the scene is bare-bone and it's a base model. The scene is also called a "template starting scene".

Please see the attached images. It's the same with "Mesh" and "Polygon" modes. :)

As explained above, please send us a sample scene and a description of the exact problem you are having:

My idea is a bit random, but could you try backing up your scene (to keep the original version) then running the following two scripts:
1 -
2 -

This should disable all volumetric effects in your scene in Corona Physical, Corona Legacy, and Autodesk Physical materials. Perhaps the camera is moving into a "zone" in which it is affected by a non-closed object with volumetrics enabled.

What exactly is happening in that animation? Is it only camera movement, or something more?
Also, if you open that scene locally and go to those frames, do they render correctly or with those black reflections?

Please report it to us with the scene file, if possible, at:

The black color picker is reported.
(Internal ID=886677936)

We will look into the viewport display issues. If you could send us a scene (even just a box) which works fine in V10 but not in V11, that would be extremely helpful.

About the black color picker. This is already reported. I have two questions about this issue:
- are you using scale other than 100% on any of your monitors? (display settings > scale)
- are you using a different scale on different monitors? (for example one monitor is set to 100% and another one to 150%)

About the Bitmap display in viewport, I think there has to be something wrong with UV mapping on the problematic object, or it's some other 3ds Max issue.
- does it work if you use a 3ds Max Bitmap instead of a Corona Bitmap?
- does it work if you create a new object (box, teapot, anything) and apply a new material with a new Corona Bitmap to it?
- is it any different in V10?

Can you try Corona 10 ( ) or even 11 ( ) and let us know here what exact issues you are experiencing:

As Romullus mentioned, this kind of effect can also be created using Corona AO or Distance maps:

Such option may be available in Cosmos in the future, but there is no such thing right now. You cannot modify Cosmos assets or build your own libraries at this point.
The workaround for now would be building your own libraries in scene files rather than in Cosmos.

I am unable to reproduce either of the issues. I can pick colors from another monitor (no issues) and I can display Corona Bitmaps in the viewport.

Could you please:
- share screenshots or video recordings showing the results you are getting
- share exact steps how to reproduce the Corona Bitmap not displaying in viewport issue (material editor screenshot, what exactly you are doing, what is happening)

This scene seems to be illuminated by:
- various glowing objects
- reflective caustics from mirror-like objects, including the ceiling

I would use default render settings (just reset everything to defaults) and:
- Use an override material to paint everything with a flat gray material - this will show you how the scene reacts to lighting -
- If your scene comes out black, this means that all lighting comes from some kind of light-emitting materials. This may not be optional, so either add Corona Lights where you need them, or exclude objects with light-emitting materials from your material override and check again.
- If you see a lot of noise from your light-emitting materials, that probably means that they are configured incorrectly. They may be using self-illumination instead of light-emission -
- Another idea would be to disable light-emission for all your light-emitting materials and use Corona Lights instead. In that case, the lighting won't be 100% accurate, but it should render much faster.
- Once you are pretty sure that everything is fine with your scene lighting, disable the clay material override and check how the scene renders.
- It is possible that it will be still noisy. In that case, I would bet on the mirror-like objects. A possible fix is using the Rayswitch Material to tell GI rays that those materials are not reflective at all - this will eliminate any noise coming from reflected light:

You could also try adjusting some render settings to make the rendering less realistic but faster (for example by lowering the Max Sample Intensity value), but if the scene is set up incorrectly, this will most likely just make it render even less correctly.
