Brilliant!  That works perfect - thank you!

The first one is the scene I made last week, and on 1800x1800 resolution finished 80 phases on less than 40 minutes.

The second one is the scene I'm currently working on, that It wont start making the phases even on 1200x800 resolution.

[C4D] I need help! / Low Rays/s and general slowness
« Last post by John_Do on Today at 19:06:08 »
Hi,

I have the feeling that Corona is becoming slower and slower with each release.

That's probably my fault since I like to put always more stuff in my scenes with all the bells and whistles. To be clear I keep things simple in the sense that I don't fake anything and go straight to the point (more or less). But I'm using all the features Corona has to offer (anisotropy, sss, displacement, no fake lighting etc. ) and it's really convenient but I'm beginning to feel a bit too much the price to pay for that simplicity.

What is your typical ray/s value in your interior design projects ?

I'm often around 2M, but it also often goes as low as 1,5M (on an OCd 5950X). Typical .c4d file size is around 1GB, it can be managed but IR is obviously very far from interactive at this stage, and even tests / regions renders are painful to deal with ( parsing times hellooooo). Copy pasting objects in a new scene to adjust a material look is second nature to me now.
For final rendering, from 2h for the best case scenario to 7h/8h sometimes, with an average time of 4h at 4K - 4/5% noise - 100 passes.

Not a rant, I know my projects are heavy and that performances decreases according to scene complexity but this slowness is distracting me more and more from the creative side of my work and I'm getting tired of it. I guess using Blender on the side for the modeling doesn't help since Cycles is very responsive and the comparison hurts (but I'm not getting into that debate, it has its own issues too !).

Did you ever feel that way about your workflow, your projects? If so how do you manage it, do you have any workaround? Should I upgrade my hardware ?

I already know about this article and this topic, but it hasn't changed much.

Coupla starter questions. How often are the machines set to communicate with each other? And are they all the same speed?

There is generally some overshoot possible, e.g. master machine is slower than the others (maybe because it's in use for other things at the same time, as well as hardware), so when it goes "Oh hey everybody, 3% noise, we got it!" the other machines go "Great! Ok we are stopping, and here are the last 20 passes I did since you last asked me", which across 7 machines would be an extra 140 passes. This can happen even if the controlling machine is not slower, again depends on how often they are set to checkin with each other.

What's the breakdown on how many passes came from which machines, btw?

Ok, I guess that would require some testing. :)

Thank you so much for your explanation...very useful and very closed to my thought...
Thanks

[Max] I need help! / Re: How to use full Computer POWER while rendering

Can you share your full laptop specs? (e.g. RAM)
Are you sure that you are not running out of RAM while rendering?

Hah that's like the exact opposite I do :- D, but I think I just keep my default at 8/2 for almost any work (it's faster for IR/AI-Denoiser work too) and that gives me enough passes for 4-8K images (it also allows for more adaptivity re-comps)
I do find AA to be important always, imperfect AA is big CGI-giveaway to me, as cheap photo will be blurry mess, but it will never have that artificial edge 3D stuff has.

[Max] General Discussion / Single vs DR render passes
« Last post by hrvojezg00 on Today at 15:35:55 »
Hi, I`ve wanted to ask this for a while now. When rendering an image to 3% noise, a single machine render takes around 60 passes in 6k resolution, but for a DR-rendered image with eight slaves, it takes more than 200 passes to reach 3% noise. This is not isolated case, it happens in all situations/3d environment. Is this a known fact?

Thanks,
Hrvoje
