I think there are less motherboards available than those chips :- ).

But what happened to those ? Are those being re-sold as barebone units ?

Hi guys

If you want some more insight on how a  2x E5-2670 render node build could look like and how it performs, I've posted my build over at cgarchitect:
http://forums.cgarchitect.com/80150-cheap-16core-xeon-node-pros-cons.html thread is running 5pages long atm, but I'm really happy with it. Images, performance, temps and thoughts regarding the build is all there.

Feel free to ask any questions and I'll try my best to answer - I'm no Juraj on tech stuff though!

I just ordered one of these. I have a bunch of extra ram and a quadro card to chuck in it when it arrives. I live in New Zealand and after a lot of research this is the cheapest option for me. I also looked at dual socket motherboards with the c602 architecture and geez they're expensive,
I guess I missed the boat when the E5-2670's started flooding the market and all the boards got snapped up. The ram is cheap too as it's ddr3 ecc which is no good for most computers :)

Love all the surprised posts on that thread in spirit of "Will it really work...but what's the catch ?" :- )

Also 75Celsius is not a lot...these pedenatic people. Nonetheless, I too have under 55 because of good workflow and cooling for my 2680v2 (Fractal XL and 2xNoctua U12S does wonders even in horizontal push which I prefer for silence),
but it absolutely is not needed.

That full HP refurbished is OK deal too :- ) I mean it's hard to find 2x those CPU plus board for much too much less anyway and you already get some memory, PSU and case as well. Just don't forget to swap the fans (not heatsinks ! just fans for Noctua), to keep it quite, HP uses incredibly cheap shit, and they're also been used for long time, their bearing mostly gone south.

Speaking of fans - anyone tried/compared Fractal Venturi fans?

Thanks for the link Jens great to see your system up and running. I'm am far from an expert but I would say those temps are totally fine in my experience. Some people get obsessed by these things and the 'acceptable limit' gets less and less! I've only had one PC throttle and that was at 90 and a bought overclocked PC where they put in the wrong cooler!

I have just ordered the same mobo as you so great to see it successfully working well. I was scratching my head over coolers though so thanks for showing me you could squeeze those Noctuas in but crikey they are tight!

Which ram did you opt for in the end? You mentioned the kingston and the samsung? There is some cheap samsung RAM floating about on ebay I've noticed but its not on the Asus supported list, when other samsung models are.

Cheers

Yeah well put Juraj :) my thoughts was that temps were fine too, but got spooked by all the post.

Win 10 Pro, just make sure to use the same user name as on your workstation on nodes (or credentials/access could be messy).

No problem Rhodesy, glad you found it usefull.

Yeah, they are pretty thight, I have to dismount one to flip the fans. But it works :)

I went with the Kingston. Couldn't find cheap ones from the Asus supported list, but the reseller assured me these would work. It was 8x this model: Memory D3 1600 8GB Kingston ECC R 1,5V (KVR16R11D8/8HB).

Thanks Jens. Shame they couldn't have squeezed another couple of MM between sockets. I was looking at some cheaper coolers as they looked like an easier fit but the nocs are no doubt better at cooling.

Hi Nick. There are several things to consider. the single core performance and multicore performance. single core performance is essential for the Viewport and modelling performance. and multicore is as u already know rendering. System with better single core performance CPU will handle more complex scene with good FPS. i7 5820K will be faster in viewport with alot of polygon (millions) than xeon e5 2670 v3. I have dual xeon e5 2683 v3 and cinebench R15 score of 3085. but single core performance is only 100!. i7 are better in single core performance i.e my old i7 2600 pc is faster fps in viewport than my new dual 2683 v3. but in rendering the dual xeons are beast :). Oh i mean viewport in 3DS MAX. i don't known about other software like c4d or maya.

As long as you find a Xeon which has good single-core turbo, which almost ALL now have. With the C0 ES being exception. If you watch their specs, compared to "real" deal, they mostly have much lower turbo. I.e, 2.6 Ghz vs 3.5 Ghz single core. For all-core turbo, the difference is lower, mostly between 200-300 Mhz.

I only want to know what happens in customs ? Do these Xeons looks suspicicously when imported into Europe ? And what do you actually get charged as Import tax ? :- D A percentage of the "real" price or the one you paid ? Or can the seller specify little cost.
Not sure if I want to try US or HongKong.

depends on your custom laws. ;) Here the import tax would be the equivalent to VAT( as long as you don't order hundreds of cpus) But: I read somewhere in the ebay rules that the seller must include customs already in his prize. Nevertheless I am prepared to pick up my Xeons from the customs duty and pay for the duty when they arrive. I ordered them from China and I don't know how familiar the retailer is with the ebay custom rules. :)

You're right, the american sellers I saw do indicate customs (often correctly 15-20perc. of the price), so if no one will study them too up-close here... (I mean, some of the earliest steppings do have "Property of Intel" branded on them instead of name...).
