in my experience such tests give just a limited view of the reality.
to decide for a renderer also depends strongly on what you do.
for motion graphic clips you probably choose octane or redshift,
if you do complex interiors maybe vray or corona.
and next to the rendertime and quality there are also other
aspects like how well and bug free it is integrated in the host app
or simply how likely it is that this software still exists in 5 yrs.

I think some of the engines, like Arnold, didn't had optimized settings.
Corona won because it's a render engine without settings :)

Yeah, I think this is well put.

You see motion graphics being done with Octane and Redshift a lot because those two are so insanely fast in certain scenarios that you'd need a bunch of CPUs to be able to compete. From what I've observed they start losing ground in complex interior situations or when you're doing more complex projects (and shaders) like AAA movies or things of that nature - Its something C4D is rarely being used for though so I guess its moo( :) ) point.

Personally, I'm investing into both Corona and V-Ray (CPU & GPU). These two engines seem the most interesting to me right now although I also have an active Octane license that I'm using a lot lately - The integration in C4D is superb with all the solo buttons and different transforms :)

i wonder where vrayforc4d is going now.
i'm pretty sure chaosgroup needs to fix/rewrite a lot of the code and
i wouldn't be surprised if there won't be an update for a longer time,
with huge changes somewhen later in 2019.

corona development hasn't been as fast as i hoped and i stopped working with
it in last summer. i'll give it a try again when there is finally a release.

Vlado said it won't take "years" but it will however take more than "a few weeks". I think we are still ways off from anything usable at this point but somehow I wouldn't be surprised if things would start leaking out during the summer :)

is there a discussion on their forum?
you have a link?

and yes, we'll see in summer/autumn if vrayforc4d has a comeback,
but by then a lot of users will have switched (to corona/redshift/octane/etc)
for me the future of vrayforc4d is not very clear..

well.. hope we get a "final" corona soon

Sure thing, its like the fourth post in this thread :) https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/v-ray-for-cinema-4d-forums/v-ray-for-cinema-4d-general/1019180-vray-next-for-max-update-1-video

I suppose I agree with you. Cinema 4D's render engine landscape is currently well suited for Motion Graphic work which shouldn't be too much of a shocker really but its kind of weird when you want to do more complex things. Especially arch-viz oriented. Currently I think Arnold and Redshift seem to be the best plugins for C4D with Octane trailing fairly close behind.

The problem is, none of those is especially suited for arch-viz per say. I mean you can totally do it but I guess there is a reason why Corona is so popular in that particular field :)

V-Ray is obviously not there yet unless you really like hitting that render button time and time again (scene preparation is not fun) and Corona is trying to get to "1.0" but its kind of been like that for the past few years. I know the developers are trying hard and the implementation as is definitely is usable but as soon as you start getting into more specific workflows the wheels come of really quickly. There are also some basic, really important bugs that are persisting for like a year or two now.

I mean that is just my opinion I guess. Personally, I've had a couple of projects throughout the year where it was just way quicker and overall cheaper  when I ported them over to 3ds Max where I've also used Corona. V-Ray is obviously crazy good on that platform as well. I just can't seem to commit to that platform because Autode$k.
