Any reason to why the ID masks sometimes render with a ghosted beauty effect over the top? It makes a noisy mask with areas of the beauty ghosted on top making it not very good for selecting IDs.
Some views work fine, others not so good.

We have a problem with the new corona camera slowly moving its own target. If you create a corona camera and watch it the target slowly shortens until its right back next to the camera. There are about 3 other cameras that are fine in the scene but each time a new one is made or copied the target slowly shrinks back to the camera. No new camera will create properly.

Is there something up with the corona camera?

Just updated to 1.7 on all the machines, some seem to be working others come up saying material library was not installed.
Tried re running custom instal with the library ticked, still doesn't work. Any fix?

some of the DR nodes seems to be hanging now and again when starting renders. They start parsing scenes but don't actually do anything and sit at the default 5gb of RAM usage as though they are waiting for a task.

If you restart the node it doesn't get found without starting the render again on the master PC even though search LAN while rendering is active.

anyone else having similar problems with nodes hanging or not being found while a render is active?

Our current work stations are between 32 - 64gb RAM and run cpu's like i7 6800k.
We are looking at buying a monster machine or maybe 2 that could be sat in the corner as constant DR machines to help smash through renders.

Firstly, is doing this the most opitmal way to help everyone in the studio render faster while working on projects. We cant upgrade everyone to dual xeons in one go, so the plan was to buy 1 or 2 that can run DR and help out.

When speccing a machine with x2 xeons, if it has 64gb ram does that mean each cpu has 64gb ram to use? or does it get split into 32gb per cpu. Never had a dual cpu machine!

Trying to spec something up roughly on Scan -  Is this expensive for what it is? and is it specced to a standard we should look for to help improve render times in the office? I'm looking for that area where its best for money in performance, once you start reaching the best of the best its usually minimal gain but a lot more expensive.


Pretty much what the title says. Where do I actually find this if I want to play with it for a bit of fun? I just updated to 1.6 and checking out all the extras. Saw the psycho sampler in the notes but im not actually sure where it is?

Is there a way to randomise the kelvin temp and intensity of lights between a set of values without doing it manually? I tried searching but not really found any relevant results.

General CG Discussion / 3ds max and opening files

Didn't know where to post as it's a help related topic but not about Corona.

3DS Max keeps causing problems with opening files. One PC in the office has trouble opening the files the following day but all other machines can open them. Everyone is on the same version of Max and if another PC opens the file and resaves its fine for the troublesome PC to then open the file and then open the previous file as well. garbage collector doesn't seem to clear the problem or help.

I find max related forums to be useless for help from past experience and people here are much more helpful. Has anyone run into problems like this?

Trying to render a pretty dark scene with lots of fluorescent light sources. This means to get it clean it's needing denoising and about 180 passes it seems. Even then it's not perfect but it's close.
The pcs keep crashing after about 30 frames due to memory allocation errors. And max closes. Is this something to do with denoising or what? If it can render all those frames before crashing is something stacking with each frame? Or is it just a frame comes along with some bad luck and runs out of memory?
There's alot of render elements due to the way of trying to create an effect. There's an element for each light source.

it saves everything corrupted like this but looks fine in the render window while rendering.

every frame is saving like this. It happened once while using rebus, they refunded and just re rendered it. but now it seems to be happening on local machines?

Having a problem with Forest Pack and DR not working together. The images keep rendering with and without grass. If i let my workstation render solo the grass is fine, if i switch DR on it seems sometimes the DR updates with a grassless image causing a ghosting on all of my grass. There are two forest pack objects, one is a laubwerk tree scatter and one is the grass. the trees have zero ghosting as far as i can tell but the grass is being weird.

I'm behind schedule now as the images havent rendered properly over night =/ does anyone have any idea why the grass would do this but not the trees? I dont have any errors from the machines rendering.

Its been a while since i've had to try this but is there a way to render each light and then use post to animate them flickering on n off seperately from each other?

I've set up the light mix passes so that I have a pass for every light but when i compare them to the beauty its always missing a bit of refraction, reflection or a bit of brightness that the beauty has.

what i have is beauty as a layer to compare against. then all the light passes are set to "lighten" in photoshop (the other options were too bright or too dim, lighten is the closest i have found) these give similar results but there is a bit of reflection/refraction missing.

I've uploaded an example of beauty vs lightmix passes comped on very simple test scene. What is the workflow for rebuilding this correctly in corona? I tested with PNGs, would I be better off just animating lights in Corona, the idea was to have more freedom in post.

Wanting to setup backburner so that I can queue a few jobs over night and weekends. Currently stuck with this error - 3ds Max Backburner Error retrieving information An existing connection was forcible closed by the remote host 0x2746

the autodesk site then gives this as a solution -


Verify below is applied to all computers participating in the Backburner network rendering process:

render slaves, manager, 3ds Max workstation.

But I don't really understand what thats going to do to all the machines or which download to even use. seems like a very short answer with no real explination on why I must do this. Is there another way round this error or can anyone here better explain this?

We are looking at getting a collection of nodes for the office to speed up project render times rather than relying on paying for services like Rebus every time our machines cant get it done fast enough.

what would be the most cost effective setup to boost our office render times with corona DR and possibly a later setup of Backburner to queue projects. dual xeons seem to rapidly increase in price but im not sure which is the best bang for buck at the moment and whether its worth going rack or just smaller form tower cases.

or with the price of xeons can multiple i7s sometimes better help via DR when they arent the main workstation?

Anyone know an easy way to scatter objects over a surface while retaining their local axis?

Feel like there should be a really easy way that i'm just forgetting about or not seeing.

I want to scatter some cubes over the surface of a dome but not have them become one object through scatter tools like 3ds max default scatter compound. I need them all as separate objects that keep their local axis pivots. so effectively its a dome of cubes with all the Z's facing the center of the dome.
