[Max] I need help! / 3ds Max ACES Color Managment
« Last post by 3dlex on 2025-07-02, 10:48:27 »
Hi all. Help me figure out is this a bug or expected behavior? 3ds Max 2026, Corona 13. When I load a diffuse map through the Corona Bitmap loader, it behaves strangely it seems to load incorrectly. This is how the texture looks naturally.
This is how it looks when I load it through the Corona Bitmap loader with default settings.RGB Primaries set to Linear sRGB.Too bright...
But if i reload it manualy 3ds max from it OCIO default rules load it like srgb and then it seems to apear corect imho...

Oh, so it's Max's issue, not Corona's. I collapsed the stack in this file, so hopefully it will load fine for you this time, but the pattern itself will no longer be easily modifiable.

Not sure what you mean  by Corona native siding materials, but it's a common issue with displacement, it's just not very good at steep, sharp corners. You can improve situation by lowering displacement screen size as suggested, but it comes at the price of increased RAM consumption and longer parsing time and the issue is still there, just less visible. Better solution would be to modify your displacement maps by blurring them, so that displacement wouldn't have to work so hard and give much better result even at default settings. The downside of that method is that it can slightly change the look, so you must keep an eye to not over done it.

Hello, how can I use and present a VR project to clients without an internet connection or access to the Corona cloud?
Thank you.

[Max] Daily Builds / Re: Are you still using the old VFB?

I still much prefer v1. Simpler and easier to read interface. I'm constantly in doubt on even what button to press for render vs interactive render in VFB2 hehe.

Being able to directly use the mousewheel to scroll through renderpasses in v1 is something I really miss in v2.

The rotating smiley, although a bit gimmicky, is something I didn't know I kept an eye on to see if IR was still going. I miss this too in v2 where I have to look at the render/stop icon on the right and it's not as clear.

In general all the icons in v2 look too much alike and are not self explanatory. I think v1 with icon+text works great. The ui in v1 is somehow more compact than v2 with only icons. I have to constantly hover over icons to see for a tooltip in v2.

Overall I see no reason what so ever to use v2.

No problem. Attaching scene saved as Max 2021. I also deleted all Corona bits, except the pattern modifier and changed the renderer to scanline, so it shouldn't crash when opening in older versions.

I wanted to see if anyone has a solution for this problem?

Hi, can you please describe the problem? Do you mean the ability to see an image with its tone mapping as set in Corona and the ability to use cryptomatte at the same time?
If that's the case, then I am afraid it is not possible. One workaround I can think of would be saving two files: a CXR (with cryptomatte) and an EXR (with tone mapping).

Thank you so much Tom! Means a lot to me!

I think that's perfect example where using Corona pattern would make more sense than using displacement.

I will try it, thanks. But considering that even with the native corona siding materials I have this same issue I thought it would be something easier to solve :(
