I'm working on a large interior with lots of displacement, up until build 2015-10-09 it works fine but on build 14 and 17 max crashes if using displacement. if its off it renders fine.

i have not been able to narrow it more. i will let you know if i find more information.  for now i have move back to build 09

using Max 2016

Please upload crashed 3ds max session's minidump file.

How to report issues?

Because you mention render is black:
could it be that you are running out of Ram? If that is the case, disable all the render elements and try rendering with PT + PT

Robin:
sorry i cant share the project.

Belly:
not running out of ram, its using 42 out of 64. it hasn't crash anymore but it renders black unless i turn off displacement then it renders fine. maybe when it crashed i did ran out of ram, i might have had another session of max running, not sure.

same scene without touching anything i can open it in daily 2015-10-09 and renders perfect.  something was changed after that release regarding displacement.

OK, if you should run out of memory with 64 Gb, it must be a hell of a scene. :-o

here is a simple Max 2016 scene where it happens.

below are the renders with the modifier on-off, with daily build 2015-10-09 renders fine, after that it renders black
