Maybe is premature but why dont we create a "materials libray" with a material scene set up, like maxwell and octane, where share our materials?

this text you can find in vray-meterials.de

"Illegal textures.
Please be aware that we have to control every material concerning legal issues. If you notice any copyright-protected textures on this site, please report this immediately here."

for me.. Each user is responsible for what it share,

all the texture must be copyright free. materials with invalid texture will be deleted.

Jeff Patton's model is excellent to evaluate the materials . is a good starting point to create the model of Corona.

the model must has simple, with curve and hard surface, characteristics for control absorption, distance, translucency, refraction effect. jeff patton model has all this for me...

in first image you can see how works stripe and cylinders control.

The biggest obstacle standing before a proper material library creation is a lack of high quality free textures. I have quite large texture library, but it's a mix of commercial and free textures and i already don't remember which is which.

If there was some good large library of free high quality redistributable textures, it should not be a problem. For example CGtextures has high quality textures only on paid section, and those can not be redistributed. Free ones are either low res or low quality.

yes I agree with what you say but this is the same for all the materials libraries you can find in the network. I don't see the problem, I create my texture using the free texture find in cgtexture, I put them repeatable and high quality.

yes, I know I have spent some time to create these textures and perhaps not everyone want to share their work, but starting from simple materials we can create a useful library.

I agree !

Good textures or not, it doesn't mean we wont do it, just let's test the idea and share  even the non heavy textured shaders so people can try it.

Just stumbled upon this:
http://www.tonytextures.com/free-photo-texture-gallery/

Apparently there are decent free texture resources.

these are not "free enough" for this purpose, since they don't allow re-publishing.

BTW: I've read the link as "pony textures" :D

How about this?
http://www.bittbox.com/license-and-usage-info

Quote
Please do not host textures elsewhere or redistribute them in their original format, if you would like to share with others direct them back to Bittbox.
I wonder what they mean by "original format" - for example if you change hue a bit or make a texture tileable, is it still original format?

There is also:
http://mediamilitia.com/category/freebies/
(can't find license but they wrote "As with all of our resources, personal and commercial use is welcomed and encouraged!")

And:
http://www.creattor.com/
As far as I know some textures are free to share.
