Hi all,

I was wondering if someone has a Depth of Field example set up file I can use to reverse engineer? I can't get it to work, and its the one thing I'm missing from my renders in Corona.

I've tried the tutorial to my best understanding, without luck. I'm trying to achieve the same results as 2.2 in the link below.
https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/5000516203-how-to-enable-and-control-depth-of-field-dof-in-corona-

I am happy to email my current set up file to anyone who is willing to give it a look and try and fix up the settings for me so I can better understand it?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, the effect of DOF is highly dependent on:
-correct scene scale (photographic controls are physically correct - for example sensor size is in mm so DOF may not be visible if for objects size you are using meters instead of milimeters)
-photographic controls (aperture size etc)

DOF depends on three things - aperture (F number), focal point distance (focus) and focal lenght (camera lens mm or FOV). In fact this is not entirely true, but let's not complicate things for ourselves.

I've attached very simple scene to test these things out. Open it, select camera object, launch Interactive Rendering. Now change F-stop value in CoronaCameraMod to something lower, like 8,0 or 4,0. Notice how DOF decreases (image becomes more blurry).

Next step, change Override Focus to different value (50, 100, 800), notice how shrp part of image changes its distance from camera.

Now scrub timeline. Camera focal length increases (20>24>28>35>50>85>135) and image becomes more and more blurry.

Play with settings and try to understand how each component affects DOF. You can even open online DOF calculator in your browser, enter same focal length, aperture and focus point values as in your camera and watch how accurately Corona matches DOF rendering. Just remember to choose 35mm camera in online calculator (Canon 5D or Nikon Dx).

Have fun

I think we need to add this to FAQ:

Q: DOF effect is too weak, everything is sharp even with f/stop values such as 0.1

A: Check the scene scale - the scene might be modelled in incorrect scale, or incorrect units might be used. Your camera sensor width needs to be in sync with your scene size. E.g. if you accidentally use meters instead of milimeters, you need to either scale the scene, or set sensor width to 35 meters instead of millimeters.

Yes, please do add it. I never knew why DoF behaved so strange. A: I always draw in meters :)

You can model in meters, kilometers, inches or whatever units you want. As long as you do this in real world scale, you'll be fine.

Yep, do not use meters instead of millimeters.
