Maybe been mentioned before but It`s rather painful at the moment, they rrefuse to be picked in the viewport and are difficult to see the area they cover.

True. Easiest way is to select a light using rectangular marquee.

even that doesn`t work sometimes. that seems to go double from the back, it`s like only the light direction lines are selectable half the time. maybe it`s already been improved in the updated daily builds ?
