There may be many causes of this... Poor hdr image, mixing hdr lighting with Corona sun... Increasing intensity of hdr image...

... mixing hdr lighting with Corona sun...
Hi Maru. Is it not advisable to use both? I've recently made the move from VRay and that was the standard way of getting sharp shadows.

So far I've seen no major difference in workflows to get similar results. If it's one or the other then great. Less to go wrong I suppose.

There's no difference to it between Vray and Corona but what you're asking is artistic question ?

With HDRi and Directionalight you have to align their intensities, because one can be overpowering each other (but that would only be issue if your directional, like CoronaSun, was so much more intense that you would loose diffuse light in your scene,
producing "super nova" like intense, yellowish look.

It's good to start simple. Also, today, the best way how to get sharp shadow from HDRi, is to use high quality HDRi which has small light source, thus producing sharp shadows as well.

In matters of lighting is always good practice to apply an override white material  to all (except windows glass off course) and test it that way.
I see you have a strong orange cast over your scene.
Try a test with only HDRI (turn off the sun) and then add the sun, then add walls etc.

Sort of but more of a practical question. I have since setup and linked a camera to a corona sun and I put the viewport view to the camera so I can perfectly align the sun with the HDRi when added to the enviroment background. I must attach this max file when I get home. It's quite clever in that the camera is setup to so that it is clipped in the near plane to you always see where the cam is pointing without the need to hide any geometry.

I normally start with HDRi to get the mood right, then like above import the cam/coronasun linked setup and align the sun with the sun hotspot through the camera.

Apart from Peter Guthries maps, what other's are there that you would say are high quality HDRi's.

You can even link CoronaSun to hdri map's U coordinates, so sun light will stay in sync with hdri:

Sorry for taking so long to reply. Thanks for the video. I've done that linking from sun to Environment map before and I found that when I swapped out the map it messed up the links. (Unless you know a way round that?)

So I've treid to take a different approach and made a max file so If I need a CoronaSun I just merge it with my scene. And look through the camera to see the position of the sun. Swapping out Enviro maps is less of a pain.

This setup can be located anywhere in the scene and if geometry's in the way just increase the sun display size and it in turn tweaks the clipping of the camera to suit. Same as the horizontal and vertical pitch off the camera.

Attached is scene with a Free HDRi in there too.
