DR does not work in the following case

on workstation You have max 2014 + 2015 installed
you are rendering from max2014
your render node only has max2014 installed
the following error appears

Parameter Received 2015.0
Unsupported max version 2015

It works if you have max2014 installed
Your DR render node has Max2014 and max2015 installed
or your DR node only has Max2014 installed

so it looks like it issues the max version to dr render from latest installed not the current running version

if you only have 1 version of max installed and no other autodesk software it works (ie new rendernode deployment)
if you install any other version (year) of autodesk software it stops working by finding the newer version of autodesk software and trying to launch the max version of that.
