I'm currently experiencing a very, very, annoying problem. It seems to affect almost all scenes, on all projects at the moment and it's killing me.

It's not necessarily Corona related (I actually suspect Vray)

I load a file. I open Slate Material Editor and then an instant crash.

I re-open the scene, open SME and almost every time, it opens fine.

However, this problem has recently evolved. Now I open a scene, load SME and it doesn't open, the whole program just completely freezes. Nothing.

I have NO idea what's causing it, and no idea how to stop it.

Has anyone experienced anything like this before?

I'm on Corona 13 Daily July 30 , Max 2024.1, Windows 10.

One note; When this happens I check Task Manager and 3ds Max has has multiple instances of 'Microsoft Edge WebView 2' open. What is this? Is it possibly related?

Thanks for any debugging tips!

Hi, as usual, we should be able to find out what exactly is causing the freezes/crashes by analyzing a minidump file. You can capture it from a crash or freeze, even if the Autodesk error reporting window is not displayed.
Here is how, check out points 1 and 2: https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/articles/4649117083409-How-to-report-issues-3ds-Max
If you would like to share the minidumps with us, it is best to start a support ticket at https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/requests/new and attach your files there.

I had problems like this before and if I can recall correctly it was always tied to graphics card driver.
Try updating or rolling back if you have just updated.

Updated display drivers, didn't seem to help :(

Maru, I'll try to collect a minidump.

Just FYI Maru,

I'm not getting any error, it either just exits immediately and quickly, without warning or it completely freezes without any error and I have to force End Task in task manager.

Seeing as no error is relevant here, will minidump still be helpful? That article you linked me to suggests it wont be.

The minidump could be useful since it can point to the dll that is crashing Max. I once had a crash when opening the classic material editor and with the minidump, support was able to tell from it that the Bercon Gradient ramp dll was crashing Max.

Also, have you seen this thread:

https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php?topic=43636.0;topicseen

If you have Vray mats in the scene, this might be the reason. Even if not, resetting the Slate views might help, there's a post on how to do it in that thread.

Hey Pokoy,

I do suspect this is highly likely connected to the situation.

However, the problem has persisted after both;
- doing a Corona Conversion, and;
- importing everything into a fresh scene

So, not sure if vray materials are somehow being sneaky in there or not...
