I would like to bake the texture of a simple plane with a Hair and Fur (WSM) modifier. That doesn't seem to work. Is it even possible to bake textures of objects with WSM modifiers?

If you need to bake the fur on a flat plane, then the easiest way would be to simply render that plane from top orthogonal view. You can use render elements to get bakes that you need, like diffuse, normals, depth and so on.
