What do you guys tend to do for clean exteriors...run 40 plus passes or 4-3 noise level. I've been rendering my 4096 image with 40 passes and initially they were looking pretty good, but the closer I looked the more noise I noticed.  Primary and Secondary set to Path tracing.

It would be great to see some examples of where exactly you are getting the noise. There may be different solutions depending on the kind of noise you are dealing with.
If your frames generally look good, but you are having some noise issues, you can also try using the denoisers.

I always use the corona high quality denoiser... here is an example at 40 passes.  I've raised my passes to 65 since this was rendered.

The noise is still too noticible, I would go higher with the passes. At least 100-150 passes.

Why not use a noise limit instead of a pass limit?

Are you using the default render settings? I wouldn't expect an image to be that noisy after 40+ passes.
With architecture like that with visible concave spaces, you should definitely use the UHD Cache as the secondary solver to speed up rendering of heavy GI areas.

I ran a sample using 4 percent and it was pretty clean.  The number of passes were 73.  So I increased the final renders to 65.  I like some grain.

I thought it was recommended to use Path tracing for exteriors.

Usually I render up to 3 or 4% of noise. Even 4k. It is mostly 230-270 passes. I am afraid of noise. In current project I'm using NVidia AI denoiser and it goes much faster, but I am on the draft stage so far
