In the same way you can put the light from caustics into its own render element, would it ever be possible to allow an object colour change post render by dropping all of the GI bounce and light cast from an object onto its own render element allowing the user to adjust the HSL of that specific layer to change the colour and in turn the GI coming off of the object?

Possibly, but I bet it would be much, much, MUCH more complex than the current LightMix.
I'll just leave this thread here for someone more competent than me to provide a better-worded answer. :)

Sort of yeah. That software is incredible and its a shame its not more developed or at least used in more workflows. Forgive me, im not well versed in the science behind it all. But if we can put the light emitted from a corona light onto its own layer, Is it not the same case that you can put the GI rays from an object onto another layer too? Then allow the user to adjust the hue of that layer? Im assuming thats how Colimo works?
