So my scene file is pretty large - just over 4GB.

If I save it to the NAS it saves fine, takes less than a minute.  As soon as I press Render though, it does the autosave which I believe it needs for DR, and then hangs at this point?

Any ideas?  Are there any file size limitations with DR?

It's not memory issue

I've just changed one setting and it's now working.

I've turned on 'Compress on Save', while it takes longer to save, at least it renders.  It's also made the file about 3GB smaller.

From what I can tell, as soon as the file size goes above 4.2GB, it just hangs during save on render over DR?

I'd still be keen to know if there's a file size limitation

I jumped the gun, the file was just rendering locally and not via DR, and thats only because I hadn't closed the file locally.  Compress on save corrupted the file and I can't reopen it.  Oh the joys

Scary to read all that. I remember having also an issue where I thought it has to do with a 4GB limitation: smaller than 4GB no problem, larger: doesn't work. But it was suddenly no more reproducible and I had to go on. So I don't have any useful outcome except that I know your pain. Btw: compressed files often do open when you try it differently: open from file menu instead of double clicking them - or the other way round. Never had a file that was in fact corrupt because of compression.

Good Luck

Yep, turns out Compress On Save Corrupting large files is a known issue that was only fixed in Max 2019.3 (i found this out yesterday) - I'm still on Max 2018.

Anyway I've fully optimized the scene and got the file size down to about 1.5GB, and everything works fine.

It's funny though, I've never really thought about file size, the only time I think to optimize is when I get RAM issues, but this scene was only eating 30GB of RAM, so it didn't cross my mind once to optimize it.
