Nope-Question:
So, new CPU will not supported under W7 and I will never change to W10. Is there a chance for a linux-port for DR? Maybe with the Standalone-Corona?

best, Thomas

That is not quite correct.
It is a big dick move by Microsoft to push W10 adoption with such anti consumer measures, but new CPUs are actually "supported". First of all, the kernal is identical from vista to win10 and the rest of the system is identical from 8.1 up to 10.
The big issue lies with Windows Updates. They will post a fail message, if you try to install W7 updates from Mid-March onwards.

Since no new features are being updated to Win7, only security patches remain the thing, that is being denied to users of Ryzen or Kaby Lake CPUs.
Since the scheduler updates are already pushed, there is no performance loss for having Ryzen and KabyLake CPUs on Win7. If CPU architecture won't see a major change (which it won't for now) There is literally no downside of using Win7 with newer CPUs.

If your router has a FireWall and you do not host any services, which you port-forwarded, there is absolutely zero need for security updates on your workstation.

Although Linux DR would be nice indeed, it is unfortunately blocked by the fact, that if you use Max to compose your scenes there is currently no way of exporting what Max does in it's system to prepare the scene data.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but using stuff like plugins makes it not possible to push to Corona Standalone, as such no chance for Linux DR.

It appears there is a workaround for that. Who would've thought... I'm pretty sure Microsoft is surprised :P

Nah, not until patch Tuesday, right? :P

Anyway, the whole W10 fiasco and the way they force you to upgrade... just makes me stick to 8.1 even more.

To be honest, I totally get it, verification and certification for older systems costs money and we can't be forever updating old(er) software but this seems more and more like it could have been solved with a simple notification that says "Hey, these updates aren't certified for use with your system, you've been warned". Windows 7 is on extended support and 8.1 is STILL IN MAINSTREAM support which is something we've bought when we got the license. If they block 3/4 of the updates now, even if they don't have anything to do with the newer CPU tech, thats would be just sad.

Then again, ever since they started tricking users into installing W10 (switching the functionality of that darn x button), weird privacy issues and the whole W10 updates and then resets half of your settings... The thing has been too goofy for me.

For some reason though, I really like W10 as a core. It has a lot of really cool, useful features and the design is veeery pleasing to me. If you strip the nonsense it seems like a really great OS.

Ugh, what a rant!

wouldn't it be nice: Corona full integrated in Blender and no Micro$oft anymore? The benefit of bash-scripts, etc....

so...I stay with w7 as long as possible, hope corona will support it for a long time

I feel ya, but I moved to W10 and didn't regret it.... after multiple hours of uninstalling tacked on stuff and running scripts to strangle cortana and all telemetry.
The thing that got me the most, was a windows update pushing these cryptic services, (which are supposed to handle connected devices) (there are quite some of those, only way to disable is via regestry)

But after the lengthy setup, I'm actually quite happy.
Uninstallung Cortana also breaks Startmenu search, no typing is received. Makes you think, how the receive Keyboard input was removed from explorer.exe and pushed to SearchUi.exe (Cortana)

hope corona will support it for a long time
Corona always will. The dependency lies with Intel's Embree. No way they will pull such a move. The Embree Repo is on Github and you can always compile it yourself. Unless they go closed source, it is basically assured.

@SairesArt

I definitely hear ya but somehow I just don't want to be bothered doing all that stuff just for the next update to come through and reset everything. I mean, I know it doesn't happen that often but then like you said... Start menu search ain't working and a whole bunch of other stuff is in the air...

Maybe I'll get around to it eventually  but I am more and more sure I will buy another 8.1 for my next workstation. That is if I'll find a legit seller somewhere :)

Gotta wonder though, what do you like so much about W10? (it isn't a shot a people who like W10, like I said, plenty of reasons to like it)

90% of what I wanted in an OS was indeed delivered by W8.1. Main thing being, that as a programmer I always wanna test my stuff on the newest platform. (I don't actually do any 3D stuff) Also smaller RAM footprint (after killing all the addons), my server only ate 580mb RAM while idle, before I setup my services.

Most of it is taste:
The lovely and actually way improved start menu, after getting rid of all the ads and suggested crap. cmd.exe doesn't suck as badly anymore. (It took Microsoft Win7, 8 and 8.1 to realize, that nobody was gonna use power shell), as a gamer dx12 is nice to have (although they could've easily released it on W7 aswell), although I disabled it: Integrated anti virus is good for parents.
Immediately killed Action Center though, I want my Desktop to be a desktop, not a Smartphone...

Start menu search ain't working
Yeah, without Cortana, no chance. But I always hated the way Windows did search anyways. It hides all system related data. If you write a programm, that works with the %appdata% folder, though luck searching there.
Luckily there is this piece of heaven. Reads the NTFS index and displays every file with the letter you typed immediately. You can even disable drive Search Index and the Windows search index service, which cuts down on stuff running.

If you gonna get W10, get W10 pro. With that you get gpedit.msc , which allows you to disable almost all spooky stuff, without having to edit the Regestry all day.

Right, thats all fine but I just hate doing that every single time the thing updates. I will probably resort back to this thread if I will be ever forced to upgrade to W10 so I really appreciate your response SairesArt.

A question though. I am unsure if I'll be able to move my existing 8.1 license to another rig. Does updating to W10 allow you to move the licenses around your computers? I'll try to buy an 8.1 license again but if that fails...
