To be fair, they aim at VFX houses and usually work closely with those. They have enough money to afford that. Definitely not aimed at a lone gunman Arch viz coffee drain.

Yes, but, Autodesk deleted MR and they bought Arnold.
MR, if I remember correctly was free with 10 nodes.
With Arnold, now, you need to pay > 10.000 euro for the same (10x1000e + 800e)
3ds Max is used a lot in big arch-viz studios also..
And, right now, Arnbold for 3ds Max it's just an alpha...
Honestly, I don't understand what happens...

MR, IRay, QuickSilver, ART, Arnond...

5 rendering engines in 10 years...

The deleted MR? Really? In Maya it's only that Arnold is now the default renderer. AFAIK MR is still on board.
And I don't think they can afford to get rid of it completely.

Ok, not deleted, but, MR isn't integrate in 3ds Max n the 3ds Max 2017
It's an external plug-in. During the installation, you need to select it.
I think that the want, slowly, to abandon MR (MR is Nvidia). And they want a new, own rendering system.
Autodesk bought Solid Angle now!
Honestly, I don't know why they created ART. It isn't good as VRay or Corona or other famous 3ds Max rendering engine.
And, usually, when Autodesk buy some plug-in, it means its dead...
Look at Character Studio, CAT, Particle Flow etc...

/EDIT/
I guess I made the wrong assumption to judge mental ray's future in Max based on what happened in Maya 2017 release. There's still no official information about whether it's going to be phased out at all, so it's perfectly possible it'll be included with Max 2018.
/EDIT end/

It'll take a while until Arnold is fully integrated. Also, if they don't come up with acceptable licensing terms for their paying customers it won't generate reasonable ROI... It's too expensive right now, almost all alternatives are cheaper to purchase and maintain.

The bitter pill for anyone using a different engine (Corona/Vray etc...) is that we've waited a few years for shading workflow improvements but instead got two renderers that we don't need. It's not entirely true however since a large part of the rendering API has been made more accessible for external renderers in general which will be a good thing for us, too. The good thing is that the mess is over now and they finally can focus on things that are going to stay for good.

I hope we're going to see more information soon.

Great MR gone. IMHO it should never have existed.

If never worked with Arnold. What are the advantages? Compared to corona.

Art is really for the Revit guys, I'm pretty sure Art is now the default engine in Revit.
Art was also to help Autodesk create the new API for 3dsmax 2017, to make it easier for Render developers.

But yeah the whole render thing in 3dsmax is a mess, any new comers are going to be so confused about which renderer to use.
So if Art is going to be mainly for Arch Viz, its so far behind the curve in features, not many people will use it.
Arnold is a beast of a renderer with lots of functionality for FX work, but still has combability issues with other Arch Vis plugins, scattering, vizpark, etc...

For me Corona still wins :)

Arnold is in development for 3dsmax integration.. wow!
I didn't follow the CGI world latest news. Does they plan to integrate Arnold to 3dsmax as the default renderer beside that ARTrenderer or as additional renderer with additional price when buy 3Dsmax?

For me Corona still wins :)
nice to know that i'm not alone here :D
