Only the new cross-platform .cgeo format is supported.

Plugins > Corona > Proxy object
Then press "pick from scene" and save your picked object as proxy.

is there any limitation in terms of correctly merged objects or something when making a proxy?

There might be some limitations currently, but they should not be there. Have you reported this on Mantis? https://corona-renderer.com/bugs
