Honestly I am not sure if the node is kept "dormant" if it still hogs performance (in 2016 Max, it's not dramatic, but it's still there) but I guess yes.

If I understand correctly, this is about the material "show map in viewport" button. That is a duplicate request here on forum. I want to give it another shot in 1.5

Yes. At first I didn't realize that half of 3dsMaps don't function correctly with it (when they aren't grayed out like those that don't at all), but full "show map in viewport" would alleviate it anyway, despite being Autodesk's fault.

If ColorCorrect can function similarly, maybe worth looking at it.
