does using a hdri in combination with the corona sun produce more noisy results than just the sun alone?

I don't think it should produce more noise. Unless you are using Vray HDRI loader to load the HDRI - it is known to cause troubles. Or if you are using Corona Sun with no skylight at all - then I would say the sun with no sky could produce more noise than sun+hdr.
