Nice thanks! 😊

Hi everyone, I posted something in the chaos Vantage forums about an interesting issue I discovered with reflection maps and live link and they told me to repost here as well:

Found a very odd bug with live link and corona: (see images)

Simple reflective material with a reflection glossiness map - works perfect, but as soon as I apply a diffuse it loses its reflection map

Diving a bit deeper into this: (and keeping exactly the same dirty/smudgy reflection glossiness map)
  • If I apply a corona colour with white (or something light) into the diffuse it overrides the reflection map entirely and gives a perfect smooth reflection!
  • If I apply a corona colour with black or something dark I get no reflection, (or half (semi reflective) if I were to apply grey).
  • I'm pretty sure if we also apply a light picture into the diffuse we will get some reflection where the light parts are.

Somehow the diffuse slot is hijacking the reflection?

- - - - This only happens when using live link, If I export to vantage from corona (without using live link) all reflections are correct. - - - -

See attached images, I did some tests.

  • These tests are using a fresh scene, which I tried after realising it was happening in other scenes
  • I've tried using corona phyiscal material - same issue
  • Tested on another machine and same thing happens
  • Im using corona 12 hotfix 1, MAX 2024 fully updated, Vantage (latest), Win 11

Thanks for any help, really excited to use live link as I love vantage, just confused why this is happening.

Ah! sorted it, there wasn't enough licenses in the office.

Strange how it still let me interactive render but not stop....and then let me render with the default buffer (the camera was different too).

Works now anyway....if anyone else has this issue.

Hi,

Very bizarre issue - no matter what file i open, even a brand new fresh file:

I can start interactive render but cannot stop it.

Also I can’t open the interactive buffer with the button on the corona toolbar

Oh and when I tried a normal render in corona it uses the default max buffer lol…..something is up haha. Interactive uses correct corona buffer though.

I’ve changed nothing on my pc and installed nothing new, all was working yesterday.

I’ve tried:

Resetting max ui (deleting the enu file)
Uninstalling and reinstalling corona

Max 2024 (up to date)
Corona 12 hotfix 1 (latest)
Win 11 (up to date)

Any help appreciated!

Cheers

Not sure if this has been thought of or how relevant it is to the initial poster’s need for this function, but here's a hacky work around (for simple geo) which I have working in a very basic scene.

Duplicate your geo (just the part which will have a light material over the top)
Apply a push modifier at 0.1 or something tiny (so the faces don't fight)
Apply a corona light material to the duplicated geo but make sure 'Occlude other lights' is unticked

Generate your lightmix and you should now have a separate lightmix element which can be turned on and off but does not block the material underneath.

see gif attatched

I had to figure this out because I needed to create metallic materials which then light up in animation manually using after effects and lightmix passes. This avoided having to do two renders.

So you know, both me and my wife submitted a ticket about it to chaos 2 days ago. She got a reply the next day and they canceled her auto renewal. I, on the other hand, am still waiting.

Hurrycat, hopefully they will get back to you soon

JoeS, I reckon send a ticket asking for a refund explaining your situation.

As you've both stated, you had no idea about this and did not remember signing up to it, just like myself and my wife.

I'm sure it's not intentional on chaos' part so I do hope it gets resolved.

Thanks, yes I have sent a ticket, but also posting here as there is another post about it over at chaos where people are saying support is not getting back to them https://forums.chaos.com/forum/licensing-forums/licensing-problems/1187370-no-way-to-cancel-auto-renewal-on-the-website

I actually went through my emails and found that last year I cancelled 3 days before, but this year I am 20 days away and cannot cancel.

I am aware that something changed on chaos' end and it's now 30 days notice (no idea when this came into play, I don't seem to have any email about it), but really hope I don't have to spend another £300 or however much it is.

My wife also purchased same time and needs to cancel so it's a double blow if we both have to pay. Glad we've noticed with 20 days left so there is potentially time to sort.

Last year I canceled my corona license a day or two before expiry and took out a new one on black friday for the discount (as many people do).

This year I don’t need a license as I use my work machine for everything. But I can't cancel now and it's 20 days before expiray, so I will get charged for a whole new year for a product I won’t use??

Will this really happen? 😞😞😞 Any light shed on this will be really helpful.

Thanks

Oh great! look forward to it then :)

Good point that will work. Although since decals project from one angle only I couldn't really use this method to create my dirt layer over a more intricate and organic shape; unless I uses loads of decals all around the object to project on all areas.

Not sure if the title describes it well enough so I took some quick screenshots of basic example. Sorry if it's been asked already, I couldn't find anything in a search.

I have a achieved it....kinda, but it's impossible to retain the same mapping of the dirt because I can't throw a uvw on corona decal.

If I wanted to do a wall with graffiti, then dirt over the top, it would be awesome to have a tick box 'retain layered materials' or something.

Thanks!

Hardware / Re: Threadripper 5975wx VS 3990x

I've done some further testing:

We have 2 3990x in the office and 1 3970x. I ran corona benchmark and the scores roughly align with the middle of the pack when looking at user submitted results which is good to know. Ours are not overlocked or anything, just vanilla.

By that logic and using the middle of the pack scores from the user submitted results:
  • 3990x is about 1.67x faster than a 3970x
  • 3990x is about 1.47x faster than a 5975wx
  • 5975wx is about 1.13x faster than a 3970x

I would give or take about 0.1 though since the difference of even a second can change the result that much. Except for the 5975x vs 3970x, I would expect the 5975x to always be faster by about 10-15% (as Nejc Kilar suggested). Also those people who are scoring under 14 seconds with a 3990x please tell us how you are overclocking them, talk about getting the most out of your money. 💸

Welp, this is good enough for me for now, Thanks everyone. I'll stick with getting the absolute weapon 3990x (while continuing to research epyc in the background hehe)

Well, that's food for thought 🎂. If I could get two epyc chips totalling at less than the price of a 3990x, but could match the render time of the 3990x.

How would I work out how well they perform though? There's so many models to choose it seems. I guess if I knew how well one performed, I just slice the the render time in half for two right?

Thanks guys,

Yea we actually also have a 3970 too :) So I'm aware of its speed compared to the 3990x.  But adding a 10-15% speed increase to give an idea about the 5975wx seems like a good idea. Ill run another test this week and see how it aligns with my other research.

For me it's all the about render times and having better cpu takes hours off. I've used max and corona on a variety of devices - laptops, i9 pc, older dual xeons and I've never noticed any difference with anything other than raw render time. If I was looking for it, I'm sure I would see that some cpus fire the render up a bit faster but I'm more interested in cutting long render times.

Only if we could put two 7950x on the same motherboard 🤯 that would be awesome.

Hardware / Re: workstation build 6-10k €
« on: 2023-01-10, 11:38:25 »
This is definitely an avenue to look down. If we take the middle of the pack scores on Corona benchmark for both the 3990x and the 7950x it appears that the 7950x is about half the speed.....and it cost a fraction of the price haha.

The issue is ram though, it's ddr5, do the motherboards allows us to have 128gb yet with 7950x yet? Last time I checked it wasn't an option but I need to do more research. Also is the price higher? Defo worth considering this before hand.

Edit: Did a bit a digging and It appears 7950x does support 128gb ram but it's not common atm maybe. Because some of the vendors I use to configure a custom build pc only allow up to 64gb ram with a 7950x, but a general search on google shows people making their own builds with 128gb, but then I see debates about it either not being as stable or running slower.....who knows.
