Thanks.

The cloud shadows from camera override map which has no clouds enabled is reported now.
The volume effect is already being tracked.

Fantastic, thank you Aram :)

its' basically that the corona sun is linked to 1 specific corona sky that messes it up. It's apparantly not linking the override sky to the active sun. So shadows from clouds will just stay the same no matter what setting you chose on your override corona sky. See screenshot where I've disabled clouds in the override sky, but we still get shadows on the ground from the old sky (the one still linked to the sun).

Attached the very simple scene for you here.

Also, we still have the issues of enabling clouds will mess up the horizon when "Volume Effect" on the sky is enabled. Basically makes it useless for aerial views, where this vol effect is really needed. It's been reported for many years :/

Not sure if this only is Corona 14 related:

When using the "Use Camera scene environment" override on corona camera, the Shadowing by clouds function on the corona sun does not work as intended. It keeps using the main scene environment corona sky. Not the one I've put in the override. The lighting seems to change and sky patterns also change when using override corona sky, its just the shadowing from clouds on the sun, that's not working.

Corona 14 22august version. 3ds max 2024.2.1

More than half a year later, it still not resolved. Would love this to be more of a priority from the devs, it's been like this for several years and is so annoying when doing aerials! I still get this bug in Corona 14 daily build aug 5.

Vray had this working 10 years ago, can't you sneak a peak on how it's done? ;)

I still much prefer v1. Simpler and easier to read interface. I'm constantly in doubt on even what button to press for render vs interactive render in VFB2 hehe.

Being able to directly use the mousewheel to scroll through renderpasses in v1 is something I really miss in v2.

The rotating smiley, although a bit gimmicky, is something I didn't know I kept an eye on to see if IR was still going. I miss this too in v2 where I have to look at the render/stop icon on the right and it's not as clear.

In general all the icons in v2 look too much alike and are not self explanatory. I think v1 with icon+text works great. The ui in v1 is somehow more compact than v2 with only icons. I have to constantly hover over icons to see for a tooltip in v2.

Overall I see no reason what so ever to use v2.

General CG Discussion / Re: Render Managers

I've been quite happy with pulze's render and scene manager. It's a nice synergy and for scenes with multiple shots the scene manager is a god sent.

I'd say 95% of the time it just works and it's very easy to setup and get going.

I haven't tried deadline, so can't comment on that.

fantastic feedback Marchik, it's exactly this experience I wanted to hear from people. Thanks again for taking the time helping out on this build. Much appreciated :)

Honestly I'm not sure if these cheaper coolers are "that bad" to begin with in terms of reliability. From my understanding the biggest issue can pretty much only be the fan itself - which on most of the coolers I think you can replace anyway. The other issues I can't help but think are pretty rare like the liquid inside the heat pipes evaporating... But someone can correct me if I'm wrong :)

That said, I do always buy Noctua just in case because I am under the impression they double check things, have multiple proper mounts for multiple sockets etc...

Oh and I guess I should mention that I do also have a 9654 Epyc for which there's like only 2 air coolers out there that aren't jet engines - and there I opted for a completely unknown firm but hey, it works fantastic on a 400W CPU for half a year now already. Pleasantly surprised to say the least.

Made me curious, what was the "unknown firm"? :) Also, what cases are you running and are you happy with the noise?

ps can you please provide a link to the reddit thread you were talking about?

It's this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/overclocking/comments/1i1cmwi/9950x_with_192gb_4x48gb_at_expo_6000cl30_stable/

64gb pr stick on sounds crazy for am5, but maybe worth waiting a couple of months to see what happens? But then again, we can always juuust wait a bit longer for something new and better. My old xeon at home (which this build will replace) scores only 5mil rays in the corona benchmark, and running on 64gb 3200mhz ram :D So no matter what, I will feel the upgrade. Last night I was tempted to just go with a 9900x and 2x48gb and save a lot of money and probably headache. The 9900x is almost half price of the 9950x3d and I would still get over 2x performance compared to my old system. With ai upscaling, I don't see a huge need to be able to render out more than 3-4k native and for that I think the 9900x might be enough and use the saved money to save up for a better gpu. End of day it's only for the occasional freelance job, but I can feel the old pc at home is troubled + win10 updates will end this year and it so old its not allowed to upgrade. Curious if the 9000 series will have smoother IR and material editor performance than the 3990x threadrippers we use at work.

cheers marchik, good insight! Should (in theory) any 6000mhz cl 30 48gb modules work in a 4x configuration? If having to lower ram speeds as you did, does that have a real life performance slow down in production work or is it just for gamers? (I don't care about the gaming performance).

Reason I ask is that the modules I saw by other reddit user who managed to run 4x48gb at 6000mhz, is currently sold out.

Seems like it does perform better anyway:

thank you for the update, I think I will go for the 9950x3d too

One other thing to consider when looking at coolers is the reliability & warranty.

Yes some of the newer brands of coolers may be cheaper but what is their failure rate like? How well do they handle incredibly high loads?

Personally I'd rather spend more on a Noctua, or even more on a AIO cooler from Corsair/Coolermaster etc. and be safe in the knowledge that it isn't going to suddenly crap out on me, reducing productivity while I wait for a replacement.

Good point. I will probably go for the new G2 noctua. I've had zeo issues with my old one that's around 8 years old now. The thought of having a pump die or leak from an AIO system is enough to put me off them.

I recently bought my 9950x.

After some tests (testing with 4 of my scenes), the improvement over the 7950x is 16-18%.
(Scene 1: 16.63% improvement
Scene 2: 17.71% improvement
Scene 3: 22.32% improvement
Scene 4: 16.44% improvement)

BUT, I didn't have the 7950x overclocked because the temps were already high at stock.
AMD claims the 9950x is more efficient so I enabled PBO, which led to a higher difference.

Hope this helps.

How is life with the 9950x so far Lupaz? I'm considering to build a new system with that cpu. What amount of ram and motherboard are you using?

cheers Maru, I'm pretty sure I read one of the win11 updates some weeks ago had fixed these performance issues. But maybe you are right and I should search a bit more for people to confirm this :)
