Sounds good enough for us, no gaming expected.

Thanks a lot!

Good morning,

We just gave a try to Juraj´s idea and it seems to  work. I didn´t find the way to adjust the speed of a specific slot, so we just changed the general PCI-E CPU link mode from Auto to Gen2, and voila, the PC will post normally with the GTX 780 installed.

This is the exact parameter in our Asus MoBo: Advance/ onboard devices configuration/ CPU PCIE link mode: "Auto" to "Gen2".

Not sure what this means though, are we gonna lose much speed when working in MAX´s viewport, Photoshop, etc.? Should we  change back to Auto or Gen3 and try to tweak other parameters?

Thanks!

Thanks for the idea Juraj,

We've already tried a couple of PCI-E slots, of course, no difference. But, those two we've tested were equal (16x I think). The MoBo gives a Q-code error 94, that the manual says it's related to PCI slots, so you may have your point about that. Tomorrow morning I'll give it a try when back to office.
Thanks!

Hardware / Swapping Titan and GTX 780. Bios won't boot.
« on: 2019-04-02, 19:57:18 »
Hi,

We're installing a new workstation today, a threadripper 2990wx, and everything seems to be working as expected. But:
We're using an old Nvidia Titan GPU from our other workstation (AMD 1950X). It seems to work fine in the new 2990wx as it was doing in the 1950X. Now, we're trying to install in the 1950X WS, an old Nvidia GTX 780 (that was working perfectly in an Intel i7-5960X workstation until this morning) to substitute the Titan GPU that was installed. The big issue is that  the 1950X won't boot now with the GTX 780 installed, not even get to the BIOS.
If we install the Titan again in the 1950X WS, it will boot and get to windows normally.

Specs of the 1950X WS:
AMD threadripper 1950X, no OC.
Asus ROG Strix x399-e gaming
128mb DDR4 gskill f4 3000ghz CL14
PSU Prime Ultra 1000 titanium
Cooler CPU noctua NH-u14s TR4
Case corsair Carbide 600Q

Can anyone help us a bit with any ideas of what is happening? We have tried to reset the MoBo memory (CRT RAM I think it was called), shortcircuiting a couple of pins on the MoBo following instructions on manual, but it won't work.

Thank in advance for your help!

Thanks again for the info. Very useful again.

I´ll certainly try to take that plastic cover off and check those tiny fans.

About the case airflow, and maybe this is stupid question, you mean mounting fans on the top pointing upwards, to pull the hot air out of the case, right? Thanks

Hi Juraj,

Thanks a lot for your fast answer. Really useful for us.

I forgot to write that we´re not planning any overclock, or a very mild one via PBO system as I read in this thread that is a good and stable way of using more of the potential of the 2990wx. So, with Aourus Xtreme, Noctua cooler and that Define R6 case, we should have no problem with temps, right? I´m a bit concerned about cooling the VRM part, because I´ve never done it before. Could you please point me to any example or tutorial so I can have an idea of the process, what kind of fan and where/how to fix it to the case. Thanks a lot in advance.

Btw, I must say that I´m still laughing about the Cundy Crush Saga comment :D

Hi,

We are building our new workstation, based on all the useful info we have been reading on this forum. I just wanted to give big thanks to all of you that have shared your experience on this long thread. We are going for the 2990wx partly because we are already happy with the last PC we built based with the 1950X and because of your positive feedback.

Our parts are these:

-MoBo: Gigabyte Aourus X399 Xtreme.
-AMD: Ryzen Threadripper 2990wx.
-RAM: 128gb Corsair Vengeance LPX 2933 CL16
-Case: Fractal Design Define R6 USB-C.
-CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3.
-PSU: Corsair AX1600i
-SSD: Samsung 970 Pro
-GPU: Old Nvidia Titan.

Our plan is to use it as a workstation during working hours, not only as a render machine. So I hope the speed in 3DsMAX, Photoshop, etc. will be decent. At least as good as the 1950X.

I´d like to ask one question about the OS. I was gonna buy a new Windows 10 pro license, and I´ve noticed that now you have the option to buy a new version called: Windows 10 pro for Workstations. I don´t really undesrtand the extra features that they comment on the shop site, so I´m not sure if that new version is necessary for the kind of PC we´re building with the 2990wx. Have any of you bought such version? Any advantages for the kind of use we will give to our PC?

Thanks in advance

Julio

Wow, amazing project, congratulations!
I love how you solved the surroundings with very nice details and great textures. And the mood in some of them is superb!

Thanks a lot for sharing with us.

Yes, nice, this is a really handy feature.

THEA Render has it since a couple of years ago, it´s called Micro Roughness, and it has 2 values to control that effect, something like the radius and the height of those "micro-bumps". A bit too complex for my taste, I would go for a simple 0-1 param like in your example.

I'm getting  those total crashes too, in a simple exterior project. It renders fine with vigente and Bloom/glare effects active. But as soon as it gets to noise% limit, denoiser starts and Max crashes.

Edit: When I try to open the scene again, as soon as it opens, 3DsMAX crashes inmediatelly, no need to render again. If I open an older scene first, I can open the problematic scene without crashes, until I render it that it will explode again.

I´m a bit confused now. I have just checked a couple of perspspectives, OLDvsNEW raw renders (linear 32bit EXR) in PS, and now I can´t really tell which is smoothest...

Maybe I was fooled when testing Int.Res.Mult in my first tests with Corona and I wrongly assumed that I needed that value to be always =2.

Or maybe when I open now an old scene, Corona is not changing Internal Resolution Multiplier value, so It is in fact rendering as =2, even when I can´t see the option in IU?

Cecofuli: Not sure about that too... I have never tried that way, but I will give a try when I have extremelly contrasted borders that look really jagged. I understand that I could render at 2x the size but with 1/4x of passes, so the render time should be the same, and when down-scaling the image I should obtain a similar noise level, right?

Hi Nekrobul,

Not for final render, I use it only for previews. For the final render I save a 32bit EXR (Highlights=1.0 and contrast=1.0) and do post in PS, there I compress the highlights as needed.

Hi,

I always use internal resolution mult.=2 for all my projects, as I always obtain too jagged edges when using =1, even when I add bloom and glare in post.
Maybe I´m doing something wrong, I´m still quite new to Corona, but in case Internal resolution multiplier is going to be removed permanently, I would really need to know how to fix this issue, if there is a workaround to get smooth edges in Corona.

I have read the changelog and it states:

"removed internal resolution multiplier (to be replaced with bloom filter)". Is that refering to a PS effect? or is bloom effect going to be a Corona feature in the near future?
I´d like to add that some clients don´t want bloom&glare effect at all, so I would like to have smooth edges without depending on bloom effects if possible.

I´m attaching a cropped example of a current project. Rendered in Corona 1.3 with I.R.M.=2 a couple of weeks ago, and re-rendered  today with latest daily with I.R.M.=1. With & without slight bloom in post.

Thanks

Julio

Edit: That image was rendered with AA filter set to "Parabolic" and "2,0px" Width value.

Sorry Ondra, but I think I can´t understand your answer, maybe I didn´t explain it too well. Let me explain this a bit better:

I bought my yearly licence months ago, at the beginning of Corona1.0, and I´ve succesfully been using Corona during this period. My FairSaas licence is already paid until next April. If I remember well, then I will have to pay full price for a new 12months period. My question is, as happens in other online services, if I pay today for a yearly subscription, will my licence add a complete 12months period to the existing "remaining time"? Or should I wait to April to renew it for a whole new year?
If the first option is correct, I could buy 12 extra months on Blackfriday with the 27% discount, right?

I hope it´s clear now.
Thanks in advance for your time.

Julio
