Full proxy support is scheduled for Beta 2. Right now the devs are finalizing Beta 1 based on the feedback from the community (bug hunting etc...).

Here is a link to the road map for the C4D version -> trello.com/b/dgI8vjDb/corona-road-map-cinema-4d

What's the difference between proxy and c4d instance (render instance active) ?
I've done a scene with these 2 solutions and render time is the same.

A proxy will export the object in a Corona specific file. To me that has a few advantages like keeping the main file small enough, having the ability to use wireframe / box viewport preview (not sure if its in c4d yet - I don't have such big scenes in c4d) which makes the viewport navigatable...

Yes Im hoping they can implement the vray way of doing it with a simple poly skeleton of the proxy so you can get a very light weight but useful poly preview in the viewport with the full res one coming in on render time. The current display options arent that great - even the pointcloud.

Hmm, may I ask whats bothering you with the point cloud?

Granted, I haven't used C4D proxies in a while but in that "other software" the point cloud is pretty awesome.
