[Max] I need help! / Shadow pass comping
« on: 2019-02-21, 00:00:18 »
What is the best way to comp in a CShading_Shadows pass? None of the blending modes seem to be doing the trick in Photoshop (32bit exr).

[Max] I need help! / Loading render back into the VFB

Is it possible to load an .exr of a render back into the VFB to tweak the tone mapping controls?

[Max] Feature Requests / Lift/Offset in CoronaColorCorrect
« on: 2019-02-19, 22:50:30 »
I always find myself having to go back to the stock 3ds max color correct to only lift the deepest blacks with lift/offset. It would be nice to have that in CoronaColorCorrect.

[Max] I need help! / [solved] Backburner restarting job
« on: 2019-01-17, 16:53:54 »
It looks like this user was having the same issue: https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php?topic=13142.0

The render submission started at 10:25am yesterday. I came in today and it said it had only been rendering for a few hours. The 'Started' time in the job summary was 6:29am this morning. I'm assuming that it's restarting when it finishes. In the errors it says "3dsmax adapter error : Ping task timeout." at 6:25am.

Is there a chance that it wrote the file before it restarted? It's not in render output path. I checked the 'Jobs' Backburner folder and there's a .zip that's about half a gig, but it looks empty and extractors don't recognize it. Could it be hidden in there somewhere?

edit: I'm using the noise threshold to stop the render.

[Max] Resolved Feature Requests / VFB History Exposure
« on: 2019-01-11, 18:54:10 »
Not sure if this is a feature request or a bug report, but when you change the exposure of the camera, the exposure changes in all the stored VFB history images. It makes it hard to A/B changes when you're trying to light a scene.

[Max] Feature Requests / Global bitmap controls
« on: 2019-01-10, 20:31:33 »
When I'm creating a texture, say I have diffuse/reflect/bump/mask bitmaps that are all supposed to be around 12" x 12". A lot of the time I need to tweak that size so it reads right in the scene, let's say it ends up being 12.56" x 12.56". I can't count how many times I've had to hunt down why a texture isn't working because I didn't change one of those damn map dimensions.

Would it make sense to have a node for this? One that controls Blur, Size, Offsets, etc that you can plug a bunch of bitmaps into. Seems like something Autodesk should have done a long time ago unless I'm completely missing something.

I always thought rendering with 'render only masks' only returned masks, but I just noticed that it also returns ambient occlusion and CShading_SourceColor. Is there a list somewhere that shows everything that 'disable shading' works with?

I'm having a hard time getting strong god rays for an interior scene I'm working on. Even when I goose the lighting and have a spotlight shining through the window, it's super foggy.

Are there some common settings you guys use for sharp god rays? Or should I just treat it like a set and get some smoke in there?

I'm using a CoronaVolumeMtl in the Global volume material slot. Absorption Color is 217, Scattering Color is 250.

Also, reading through the help files, I can't find anything about what "Volume mapping" does. The modes are "On Surface" and "Inside Volume". Can someone shed some light?

Edit: In the "distance" setting for volume materials and fog, what is the distance referencing? Distance from what?

I guess I can make the chair self-illuminate 255,0,0 or something, but is there a more elegant solution? [see attached]

I assume this is a licensing issue, but I thought I'd raise my hand anyway.

I've got $5 I can throw over if that helps :)

General CG Discussion / 3ds max on a Chromebook?
« on: 2018-08-28, 19:28:48 »
I'm looking for something small I can take around and noodle on 3ds max with. Are Chromebooks powerful enough nowadays to navigate small 3ds max scenes and a tiny Corona IR viewport? This wouldn't be used for production, think more of a 3D sketchpad.

When I save an .exr out of Corona's VFB with render elements embedded into the file, the alpha channels and RGB mask elements are "off", as in all the information isn't there. Check out the attachments.

For instance, if I put the color picker on green in an RGB mask element, the G value is 191 and you can see some checker transparency in the black.

However when I save out the render elements individually, the images behave as expected. The color picker samples green as 255.

I'm saving these out of Corona 2.0 and opening them in Photoshop 19.1.6 with the EXR-io 1.03 plugin (to allow Photoshop to open embedded .exr files)

Not sure if this is more bug fix or feature request, but can you make it so the interactive rendering windows don't have to restart after something like setting 'show material in viewport' from the material editor?

There are a few other instances where this happens. I don't have another specific example off-hand, but they don't seem to have anything to do with affecting what the renderer is doing.

Small thing but it would make the work experience a bit nicer if the IR didn't have to reset so much.

Edit: I just found another one so I'm going to start a list by editing this comment as I find them. By all means tell me if there is absolutely no way to fix it even though the action seems unrelated to the renderer.

-opening the slate material editor
-entering and exiting sub-object mode
-changing an objects wireframe color
-putting an object into another layer in the scene explorer (not moving it in 3d space)
-changing the pivot point of an object
-hiding or unhiding objects when "render hidden geometry" is checked in the common render dialog
-after the scene completes an autosave
-changing the Gizmo size of a light
-when hitting "show material in viewport"
-adding or deleting light sources from the Light Select Render Element

[Max] Feature Requests / CoronaBitmap paths
« on: 2018-08-22, 17:22:07 »
So this is a super small request, but I think it would help make the daily grind a bit less painful.

I love how CoronaBitmap has that little info box with the resolution and full path to the linked bitmap. The only issue is when I want to copy that path I'm always fumbling around trying to get the mouse to select the whole thing or it grabs the resolution info too.

Can you make so just clicking anywhere on the path it copies to your clipboard? Or something like Bitmap classic where you can right-click the node and hit "edit bitmap"?

I feel a bit ridiculous making a post about such a small thing but over thousands of hours, this will help workflow.
