I don't agree with that. If you want some object not to affect distance, you simply remove it from the list. I find it very helpful when i can use objects that are influencing distance shader and are hidden from view at the same time. It would be fine if we could choose which behaviour we want to use, but definitely not ok if proposed option would be the only one.

[C4D] General Discussion / Re: Reflections doubts

But I still don't understand how it is possible than in a reflection very near to the object (for example the one with the dishes) I can find "information" that aren't present in the object itself.
It can't be possible that, in almost 10cm, there is a difference in light direction to achieve such a result.

Apparently it's very possible. Look at the attachment - the phone can't be any closer to the hand cream tube and yet reflection on its screen is so much brighter than on the tube itself... exactly like it is in your renders ;]

I think this should go as a feature request - add support for Embergen VDBs.

I see no noise in the image, only severe over sharpening.

Well, technically it's impossible to bake correct reflections, because it is tied to angle between light source (environment), surface normal and viewer eye-point (camera). There are some bakers that can bake fake reflections, but Corona is not into fakes, so i would not hold my breath on something like that ever happen.

Reflection can't be brighter than the actual object itself, that's right, but what part of the environment is reflected directly from the object and what is reflected as a secondary reflection, is not necessarily the same thing. Highlight from the sun, or other bright light source can be invisible on the object, because its curvature, but when that same object is reflected in another surface, the highlight may appear visible and it may look that the object became brighter. It's simply optics. Corona does not invent things and it is physically accurate, Corona materials are written with energy conservation in mind, so you can be assure that they don't break physics laws.

[C4D] Feature Requests / Re: Normal Maps - which dircection
« on: 2023-03-24, 10:39:02 »
Proper normal maps with distinct features can be quite easily distinguished between OpenGL (+Y) and DirectX (-Y). Usually the former looks more correct to the eye, while the latter looks inverted. You can see good example of this here: https://www.texturecan.com/post/3/DirectX-vs-OpenGL-Normal-Map/ scroll to the examples with keyboard. This is not 100% reliable technique, as some normal maps can be hard to read and sometimes your mind may play tricks on you, but it's quite handy to know that you can quite effortlessly identify like 90% of good normal maps. I said "good", because this trick almost completely does not work on trash normal maps, that are derived from single images and in other fake ways.

Out of interest - what application has baked reflections nowadays?

There's nothing to configure, really. As i already said, Corona should give you an optimal quality straight out of the box. There are some controls in render setup>performance tab, like AAvsGI, LSM, MSI and few others, that can be tweaked to try optimize render speed in specific situations, but it's very scene dependent and what's work in one scene, might worsen things in another one. If you don't know exactly what each of these controls are doing, it's much wiser to stick to default settings as this will be much faster than try to find gain minutes of render time by blindly turning the knobs.

Regarding the zoom, i repeat myself again - please provide an example (rendered image, or screenshot) with the issue, otherwise there's nothing to advice you, i'm afraid.

[C4D] I need help! / Re: How to use...
« on: 2023-03-24, 10:07:16 »
Is there some specific reason why you don't want to use separate greyscale textures and insist on using using packed texture instead? Corona does not have the tools to separate individual channels, but that should be possible to do with native DCC tools, at least in 3ds Max it's certainly possible.

Corona by default should give you the best quality available. Could you show some examples of "pixel breaking"? It's hard to imagine what you are talking about, maybe you are simply zooming in too much? :]

[Max] I need help! / Re: Mesh turn transparent in View port
« on: 2023-03-22, 19:41:00 »
Try to turn off transparency in viewport preferences - 3ds Max 2023 has this bug where it sometimes shows some objects as transparent for no apparent reason. Turning transparency off solves this issue, but you'll loose any transparency in that viewport - still much better than a viewport full of ghost objects.

[Max] Resolved Feature Requests / Re: Dirt map?
« on: 2023-03-22, 14:16:15 »
Corona AO has directional offset feature since forever. Give it a try, it might not be as sophisticated as dedicated tool like RichDirt, but nonetheless you can quite easily achieve convincing weathering effect with Corona AO.

[Max] Bug Reporting / Re: Max Crash on opening LUT related ?
« on: 2023-03-18, 14:28:03 »
The best solution would be to provide LUT file in question to the support team, so they could test it and see if something can be done to improve how Corona handles that file. If the file can't be shared publicly, then go to Chaos support portal and open new ticket: https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
