So, another beginner's question: like the title, how can I check if an object is a cProxy using maxscript? Thanks!

[Max] I need help! / Several computers fighting for DR nodes
« on: 2017-02-01, 09:43:27 »
A question came up at work; if several people are rendering using DR, how does that work? Do the first computer get all the nodes until that render is done or can DR nodes switch scene if another computer is asking for it?

I would really like persistent render regions that can be switched on and off and scales with the VFB, until you delete them. Workflow-wise, it's pretty annoying to have to re-add the same region again and again every time you switch from render to IR or change the window size.

Also, we use Deadline for our render farm, and I haven't figured out how to send a render with a region to our farm. If regions are saved in the file and are active, corona could render just the regions, not matter what computer is rendering it. Just open the scene and render. That's how VRay works and it's a very good workflow.

That's my request, thanks.

[Max] I need help! / Render regions confusion
« on: 2017-01-13, 09:52:39 »
Coming from VRay, where I was using render regions extensively, I'm having a hard time getting a good workflow for regions in Corona.

1. Is there a way to save render regions for later use? Now they seem to clear when changing IR/VFB size. In VRay the region just scales with the VFB and you can turn it on and off and it persists until you manually change it, which is very good.

2. What is the best/correct workflow for rendering regions when sending a render to for example Deadline (which we use)? Do you have to start a render locally, stop, create region, send to Deadline?

I'm sorry if these questions have obvious answers, maybe I'm stuck in the VRay workflow.

I'm having big problems with heavy scenes and interactive rendering. I have a few trees (instanced proxies) and a lawn with a corona scatter scattering grass tufts. Sometimes it works, but most of the time Corona just gets stuck in a loop and 3ds max starts flickering and blinking every ten seconds or so. Even if I turn off the scatterer and keep just the trees (20 or so), it's just stuck. I've included a screenshot of my task manager while it happens and as you can see, it loops and never goes above 50% ram.

While this is happening, the VFB and max gets unresponsive and I have to hammer the "Stop" button until it registers.

I think I started another thread about this when I first started trying Corona, but I can't find it now. When I ran into this problem that time I was on a different computer, using a different operating system, working on a different scene, but got the exact same thing.

I just yesterday had the chance to try out the LightMix feature in a real project and I think it's going to be a big part of my workflow.
I have one thought (and this might have been discussed on this forum before, if so, sorry about that); wouldn't it be logical and/or nice to be able to have several LightMix elements and each one contained a different set of settings? That way you could have an element with daylight and one with night, etc? I know you can do this manually by saving/loading settings, but we almost always render on our farm and only get the finished images saved out, no chance to edit anything manually once it's rendered. Or maybe I'm missing something, maybe this is already how it works?

[Max] I need help! / Interactive won't render objects
« on: 2016-12-15, 11:57:31 »
I have a problem with a scene that renders fine, but when I start interactive, nothing renders. Well, the background image renders, but no objects show up. Corona 1.52, Max 2017. Anyone encountered this?

Edit: Works fine in Max 2016.

Edit 2: Nope, stops working in both versions after a while.

I've made a template "start here" file that my group can load at the beginning of a project and I'm having some problems. For some of the others, all saved images come out as if they were saved in gamma 1.0, when on my computer they save as gamma 2.2 (which is correct). I've checked every gamma/lut setting in max and the scene and I can't figure out what the difference is. Any tips?

I'm making a script that batch renders thumbnails from a dir full of .max-files, but I can't find any info on getting/setting VFB setting values. Is this possible?

[Max] General Discussion / Backward compatibility
« on: 2016-11-04, 09:18:45 »
We have projects going back years and sometimes we need to go back and adjust old images with new models, materials etc. Currently we are using V-Ray and new versions have always loaded and rendered old scenes without problem. What are your thoughts for Corona? Will we always be able to load old scenes and render them as they looked when created?

[Max] I need help! / Mass convert V-Ray materials to Corona?

Hi. I have a lot of V-Ray materials saved in .mat files. Is there an easy way to batch convert them to Corona materials?

[Max] I need help! / Distributed render flips out completely
« on: 2016-10-20, 10:30:20 »
I'm trying to render a region using DR. I've set DR to "enabled", "search while rendering" is disabled, and get 27 render nodes although I only have 9. While rendering, it jumps 50 passes at a time and after a minute it says "rendering pass 234" and every pass gets darker and darker until the whole render is almost completely black (I then pressed "stop"). This is a bit disheartening. Any idea why Corona is doing this?

I'm using 1.5.

[Max] I need help! / Raw render elements?
« on: 2016-10-18, 09:37:37 »
Is there some way to get raw render elements a la V-Ray? Like shadow, reflection and refraction elements, for example. I tried searching, sorry if it¨s been answered before.

Hi. I use the "RenderMask" script when rendering in V-Ray, but the latest version of that script seems to lock up Corona/Max (I have to force close it). I installed the Corona toolbar and tried the "RenderSelectionMask", but it takes a while to render, where RenderMask is almost instantaneous.

So, what is the best way to get a quick mask from Corona? I know about the "mask" render element, but pretty often I need to get a mask of some detail after rendering.

So, I'm evaluating corona and I'm halfway through a project using 1.4, but I'd really want to try 1.5 before I make a decision and present it to the group. Would it be a bad idea switching mid-project? What could go wrong?
