Feel free to use any methods you wish to achieve the desired results.

From a bit more technical point of view, it always makes more sense to:
- use the controls available inside the material rather than additional tools
- use native Corona tools rather than 3ds Max ones

So it's better to use the controls available inside the Corona Physical Mtl rather than plugging a Falloff map to achieve a similar result (for example, you can enable the Clearcoat layer and adjust its Fresnel IOR). This will give you the most physically accurate results and in many cases will also render faster.

Hi, currently a solution to this is only implemented in the Corona Color Correct map. It accepts a "master" controller which can be plugged into multiple nodes.
We would also like to implement this in other nodes such as UVW Randomizer and Triplanar map.

The only workaround I can suggest for now is using the 3ds Max controllers

That's some good news. Both the users and the support team can sleep better now, but we will continue investigating to find out what is causing it so that we can sleep like babies.

Guys, can you please try this? Unfortunately I can't tell if this will help or not, but it helped in some similar case in the past.

As a workaround, please try going to Render Setup > Common and DISABLING the "Rendered frame window" option.
This will hide the VFB, but you will still see the rendering progress (i.e. how many passes are rendered, what is the rendering status).

If possible, please try this and let me know here whether it changes anything or not.

Does Corona 8 mean Corona 8, Corona 8 HF1, or Corona 8 HF2? :)

On a second thought, I am not sure if it makes sense for LightMix to detect illegal characters.
LightMix render elements are named after each object. If an object name includes some illegal character, a render element with this name will be created.
At the same time, the user can always rename a render element to include illegal characters, so this is not specifically a LightMix issue.

When this happens, 3ds Max should show a warning (attached) and this warning should be included in the log files.

I will log this as a more general issue (not only related to LightMix).

We have this issue as well. 3DS Max 2022 service pack 3, Corona 8 Hotfix 1

Are your scene and assets stored on a local drive (e.g. C: on the computer where you are rendering) or in a network location (e.g. Z: network drive) or on a Google Drive, Dropbox, etc?

Also please feel free to contact us about this here if you haven't yet:

some further experiment showing the "depth" it can create

So, here is the deal:

You can use the Corona Volume Material to create an object filled with heterogeneous medium.
Homogeneous = e.g. milk, where the volumetric effects are the same across the whole volume
Heterogeneous = e.g. clouds, where there is some "pattern" of things which have different density inside.
To do it, create a Corona Volume Mtl, enable the "inside volume" mode in it, and use a texture to control absorption (what is the density of the medium) and/or scattering (what color the medium has). Procedural textures will work great here as they will create 3D patterns. You can use 2D textures too, but they will not work that well as they are just... well 2D.

What I have never thought about was that you can plug the Volume Mtl as the base layer of a Corona Layered Mtl, and then you can add other layers, such as glass or metal on top. So you can create, for example, an object which is made of clear glass (or rough glass!) with a heterogeneous inside.

Here are some quick, simple examples.

The first one is "just" a Corona Volume Mtl + clear glass on top.
The second one is the same but with some roughness added to the glass, and then clearcoat on top.

I hope this can help and gives you some nice results.
The definite drawback is that this can render very slowly... to improve render times, consider the following options:
- in the Corona Volume Material - increase "step size" to get faster rendering and lower quality
- in the Corona Volume Material - enable "single bounce only" to get faster rendering and darker result with no internal light bounces

P.S. Please note that I used Corona 8 HF1 to create this scene, but I would highly suggest installing Corona 8 HF2 - which was literally released while I was typing this post. :)

You just made me realize something I haven't thought about before.
Nice pics + scenes incoming...

Great to hear that it's working fine for you now!

+1 I noticed Vray 6 was giving me better results with Normal maps than Corona.

Are you sure this is related to Mikk T support?
Could you share some examples of this? (renders, and scenes if possible)

Hi Marcin, i have an object which shows ugly artefacts in Corona no matter what normal map i use (i tried both 3ds Max and MikkT normal maps). I can provide the scene and textures privately. Curious to see how it renders in V-Ray, or other modern off-line renderer.

Hi, please send it here, we will check it:

You can track our roadmaps under the links below. If GPU / hybrid rendering will be ever planned, you will find it there.
