You probably mean caustics. :)
It does work by default in Corona but to make it render faster, just place a glass object in your scene, add a light and switch renderer from "progressive" to bidir or vcm.

Translucency is not a fake implementation of some other feature. It is different than SSS. The black/white/green whatever you set is a COLOUR value for transucency, the other value is fraction. If you set translucency colour to black, then black colour will blend with diffuse. At least that's how I understand it.

If darker translucency colour would mean less translucency fraction, then how would you make a very translucent material that is dark?

So please implement interactive rendering into the 3dsmax version, because in VRay it's real timesaver, and I wouldn't want to live without it anymore.
And please implement region rendering, so being able to choose a small part of the Camera View to render, concentrating the full CPU power onto a small part of interest.
Interactive rendering is already partly implemented.
Region rendering is implemented since... forever?

You are right, I didn't get it you are using some reference model, but after you posted these photos I am even more confident that you should make it more reflective. It looks like it's covered with some shiny coating or wet alien goo. The real model is also brighter in terms of albedo.

For displacement to work correct you should add "smooth" modifier (not meshsmooth!!!) to your geometry and give it maximum smoothing angle. But in this case there is no point in using displacement. You should use this map as bump map. If you are not happy with the result, you can try setting this bitmap's "blur" parameter to 0 in material editor or disabling filtering in Corona's render settings (uncheck "filter texmaps").

I think your metal looks better but maybe anisotropy is even too much pronounced.

About the map - are you using it as displacement or bump map?
