Idea: you have lots of high-poly objects (eg. trees) that take some time to parse and to render in reasonable quality, and you want to make quick preview of how they are scattered without reducing their number. It would be nice to have possibility to change scattered objects into bounding boxes (/other?) in the final rendering, would really help when using IR. Random thought: maybe "in viewport only" or "in rendering" checkbox next to "display previz type"? Though I can imagine it could cause some havoc if left checked unnoticed. :)

You can easily achieve that with a substitute modifier. Just add substitute modifier to scattered object(s) and pick some box as a substitute.

It could be easier with a checkbox, but ok, let's forget about it if the users don't want it.

...the switches work wrong when using IR...

...also it could automatically make the object bounding box-sized...

Everything that has viewport / renderer switches works wrong with IR. It's a long standing bug.
