I did mention the image sequence in my reply, but did not know about using a separate mesh for each frame. I assumed the final export would "combine" them into one animated model. I'm guessing most people realize they can't alter the pre-animated people. Actually, you can adjust timing and a few things.
Okay I learned a couple of things after playing with this for a bit. Turns out I was wrong about the material not working. I failed to actually render some frames and only relied on the viewport. If I go down the timeline and change the quality of the material preview, the proper material pops in. I also did an animation sample and I think it is very usable indeed. I don't have experience using Alembic, so didn't realize the .c4d file, references the .abc file with must contain all the mesh frames as it is 580 MB.
The other animated people's meshes (non 4D) are a little distorted and not 100% accurate.

@bnji_rsv – If you are affiliated with that site, I don't mean to come across as overly critical, just posting what I saw. I would use some of those assets in the right project.
