CXR - Save Multi-Layer .EXR

I want to take advantage of the portability of the .CXR format, but running into some issues with saving multi-layer .EXRs for the OpenEXR format. I've spotted a few threads addressing this issue, but the workarounds are not working for me - as I understand them.
