Hey guys,

I recently started a topic about my new build ((CLICK)

I'm a bit confused about the PCIe slots I have available.

To sum it up: I have ordered the Ryzen 9 3950X cpu (24 PCIe slots), which will be assembled on the Asus Rog strix 570X E motherboard. My GPU will be 2080 ti (which will use 16 PCIe slots to connect). The motherboard also has 2 x M.2 Socket 3 with M Key for NVMe SSD's.

Since I'm really am quite new in all this, here's my question:

Are these M.2 sockets also connected to the PCIe slots from the CPU? So for example, let's say that apart from the GPU I would install a Samsung 970 EVO (regular, plus or pro) that uses 4 PCIe slots to attach, would that mean 20 of my 24 PCIe slots are taken? Or are these M.2 slots a thing on their own?

And what if I decide to install 2 of them SSD's? Would that mean 8 slots will be used?

I really have no clue, and the internet has so many opinions that I can't really make my mind up :D

Thanks!

Cheerz!

Hi Jochen I think Juraj already posted this on the 3950x thread but I will re-post it here for you:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wmsTYK9Z3-jUX5LGRoFnsZYZiW1pfiDZnKCjaXyzd1o/htmlview#gid=2112472504

Scroll to the right and you will see that you have information regarding which slot of the motherboard is connected to the CPU or to the chipset of the motherboard. You have 24 PCIe lanes on the CPU, 4 of the 24 are used for the interconnect to the X570 chipset meaning you have 20 lanes left for other utilization. The X570 chipset has another 16 additional lanes that are configurable in PCie x16,x8,x4, and so on... Just check your motherboard manual or the link I gave you and you will see yourself which m.2 or pcie slot can be used in combination and which slots are turned off when you use the other.

To answer your questions regarding the ssd's yes you can use 2x m2 ssd's :).
