Hi,
I have a computer with a single 4k monitor with a 1080ti, dual xeons and 128gb of ram. I noticed the responsiveness of the image editor (spinning the tone mapping for instance) isn't as smooth as on another computer I have running dual HD monitors. I'm wondering if anyone has discovered the perfect graphics card or hardware setup for editing on a 4k monitor? Thanks!

A higher resolution monitor will have to push a lot more pixels, sort of exponentially.
You kinda have to choose between a faster response or a 4k res.

4k is fine for working with text and photos, browsing the web, and maybe even Photoshop or light video editing.
But even interactive Corona will be slower in a viewport or vfb, because the rendering resolution will be higher.
I heard this before from a few friends. They upgraded to a higher res monitor and now some things were slower.

A workaround will be to reduce the monitor resolution when working with 3d.
I noticed certain resolutions look better than others, and I also bump the sharpness to +5 on the monitor while using a non native one.

ok thanks. so there's no $10000+ card that will make the experience smooth?

This really isn't often anything to do with raw processing power necessary, we're just dealing with tons of badly written viewports in many software.

And Autodesk and Adobe are (non)surprisingly the biggest offenders.

You could have GTX 4080UltraTiMegaMax which someone brought your from future time space travelling, 3dsMax and Lightroom, for example would still be terribly slow, as they're using the GPU resources not in very stellar way.

With 1080Ti you already have the best card, since most softwares run on default with DirectX mode, there is no performance benefit from specialized driver and architecture of Quadro range cards, where the benefit applies to certain OpenGL modes in CAD applications.

You might want to check what kind of cable if going from your video card to your monitor. If I use HDMI on my monitor it is locked to 30Hz. I need to use a Display Port cable to get it any higher.

Hi,

putting it simply, on 4K displays in a lot of cases CIE has to process 4x more data than on regular displays (the data has to be processed by CPU, passed through RAM etc.), because you see more pixels at once. So it is expected that it would be slower.

Which controls are too slow for you?

Ok thanks for the input.
sebastian___, for now, I'll resize back to HD for CIE.
Juraj Talcik, lol! I had to ask
JGallagher, I have a DP cable that came with my dell 4k monitor.
mike288, All of the tools act slow and even switch to another spinner when my mouse crosses over them. Which made me think my mouse and drivers were causing the problem. But I believe it's what everyone else is saying, the amount of pixels just bogs down the process.

OK, but that is strange.

My comment was about spinning light mix spinners, for instance. Applying changes to the viewport could be slower due the data growth. But simple UI things like hovering buttons, spinner arrows, etc. should be still responsive (they somehow changes colors when the mouse cursor is over them). Switching tabs should be also instant. If it is slow for you, it is definitely wrong.

Could you better explain, perhaps on some particular example, what exactly is slow on your 4K display? Maybe you can record a screen capture?

And is it still slow if you let the system disable High-DPI awareness for CIE. To do it locate C:\Program Files\Corona\CoronaImage.exe, open its Properties via right-click, switch to Compatibility tab, check Override high DPI scaling behaviour, and select System (probably, try other options if it does not bring the following effect). That should disable High-DPI awareness and now when you start CIE, the system should rather upscale its standard non-High-DPI form (because the system does not respect that CIE is High-DPI aware). Is it still slow in this mode?

[Corona team], do you guys have 4k+ displays in your office on which you test the hi-dpi settings ?

Yeah, Mike is actually working on 4K monitors. We're not that retarded, you know ;)

Nothing malicious in my asking.

There was period of time where you didn't had Xeons to test hence my question. High-dpi panels still aren't that popular for workstations, I would guess vast majority of corona users don't have one hence the very sporadic problems being reported.
