If I turn on full denoise mode as soon as my render finishes it immediately crashes my system. Not just corona but my screen goes black. The computer stays on but its totally unresponsive and the only way to fix it is to hold the reset and reboot from the motherboard. I thought it was a hardware thing but I have narrowed it down to the denoiser.  I have tried on a few different scenes and get the same result if its a simple or complex scene.

I have also tried 1.6 HF1 and HF 2, also the daily build for 1.7 and still crashing. Bios and drivers are all up to date. Not sure what else to try?

I have just upgraded to a Ryzen 1950X Threadripper, with a msi X399 carbon Motherboard. Has this happened to anyone else? Really would be nice to be able to use the denoiser.

This seems like a hardware/driver problem. Do you have the CPU or memory controller overclocked?

Can you check the CPU and motherboard temperature just prior to the crash?

No its not overclocked still at factory. All my drivers are up to date. The temperture is around 57 deg, I have yet to see it go above 60.

Just to test I tried Vray with the denoiser and have no issue, but as soon as I use corona with the Denoiser mode set to full, it crashes. I would much rather use Corona :)

Maybe the motherboard manufacturer needs to roll out an update to their drivers??

I am pretty sure that my problem is caused by the "core performance boost" in the BIOS. I disabled that and all seems to be working as expected.

Not the best solution but maybe they will fix in the next update. Hope it helps anyone else that runs into this.

Things like this are why I hate being an early adopter :) We've had some minor problems with Ryzens just after their release, but nothing so serious and everything has been fixed by BIOS/driver updates since then. So hopefully in one or two months, you may be able to turn that boost back again to fully utilize your hardware

Thanks for the info anyway

Ya thats the risk of being an early adopter, but man its fast. Now that its working well worth it. With the boost it was pushing the peak clock speed to 3.7 from the factory 3.4, I would like to see if overclocking to 3.7 will produce the same result. anyway its running really well right now so I am not going to mess with it.

Thanks,

This is happening to me now. Definitely disabling Core performance boost in the BIOS helps a bit (at least it renders for a minute, sometimes even up to ten or so), but screen always goes black after some time. With Core performance boost enabled, it ALWAYS goes to screen black right after the image is denoised.

I updated the BIOS to the latest but nothing changed. What could this be about?

Thanks!

Screen going black sounds more like a GPU issue off the top of my head. Is NVIDIA AI denoising enabled (either for IR, or for final render)?

I don't think so... I replaced the GPU and installed a brand new 2060 Super, nothing changed though...

I just did a test and kept rendering for some time. After 2-3 hours (denoiser disabled), screen went black and the red VGA light turned on in the motherboard.

This is so frustrating...!

Juraj, what would you say this could be about?

Thanks guys

The VGA light on the motherboard would suggest it is the graphics card :) Could be something like the GPU is overheating, e.g if the cooling from the CPU is not enough and causing the whole internal temperature to go up, and the GPU cooling can't handle it. First check though is always to look into the motherboard and GPU drivers.
