Gallery / CGI: An Artistic Medium
« on: 2019-11-03, 22:13:15 »
Hello coronauts,
so finally after a lot of time spend I would love to share with you short film - CGI: An Artistic Medium.
I hope that it is going to help understand friends, families, clients and everyone what CGI is and what a CGI artist devote much time and effort to. I hope that the film builds a correct and general knowledge and is going to be relevant.

Here is official description:

A partnership with world renowned architect Amal Hanafi, The Beldi Project required giving life to spaces where CGI has been prioritized before photography. I spent a week in Rio absorbing the emotions of the building, then produced a series of images that demonstrated its beauty and functionality.
As a result, there has been an Art Exhibition and 12 minutes Short Film "CGI: An Artistic Medium" created with strong beliefs in CGI.
I believe that CGI is an artistic tool. Just like photography is, just like painting is and just like sculpting is. So far, CGI has been mostly used for commercial purposes and has been very technical, which it still is. In my eyes, it is another tool that can reflect artistic soul. I believe that one of the biggest issues is that people don't know what CGI is. Running into a random person, it is very hard and imaginary to explain. Many times simply perceived as photographs. I have had this belief for many years but now found a platform that has strong enough story and visibility to share it. Not only in CGI but in Architecture, Art and many different fields too. I would love every artist to be able to show what CGI is and believe that because of technical advancements and enlightenment, in couple of years there might be recognition of CGI as an Art Form and general knowledge of the process and efforts behind. I believe that CGI is going to be in museums in couple of years.

The film conveys a story of creative collaboration between architect Amal Hanafi and CGI artist Jakub Cech that led to an Art Exhibition of CGI images. Film portrays general process and efforts behind CGI while striving to bring general knowledge and recognition of CGI as an Art form for broad audience.
Story spans across multiple locations in Slovakia and Rio De Janeiro. Filmed by UK duo Raspberry & Jam and live Orchestra scores by Tomas Koppl.

To further support spread of general knowledge of what CGI is, there has been an interactive webpage created with naive illustrations by Simona Cechova here https://www.jakubcech.net/what-is-cgi/.

So guys I would love to share with you the little video I created for the series, here:

Super quick technical info: It was done by super old school camera back projection technique of the final rendered images on the mesh. I photoshoped multiple images, extended scene etc. I had to doit this way because I photoshopped a lot of images and this also saved a ton of rendering time.

Here is also my full SOA talk (a lot about the series as well):

Cheers! :))

Finally, the last one! :) The project was on hold because of the license, should have been out so many weeks ago.
ATTENTION - the project itself was not rendered in Corona, but in Stylit instead. Corona was used to render out guide passes (thats the input of Stylit).
On Behance there is demo to download and material ball I was capable of creating - very fun to play with hah.

Beautiful Computer Generated Images is a collection of Seven projects, collection of seven Manifests, where every piece is an intersection of Technology and Art. It depicts imaginary places, imaginary objects where every element is arranged to create beautiful Composition and where photorealistic simulations are enriched and elevated by Custom color mapping to craft a piece formed by true Art.

Manifests show what I consider truly beautiful, what I am passionate about and what I love. Passion in Computer Generated Image, passion in Composition, beauty in Simplicity, Light, custom Colors, passion in bending image within a Purpose, in adjusting piece with an Abstract elements, all elevated by Custom Color Mapping to form something Unseen, something New and very Artistic.

Manifests have been developed for 1 year, working solely on the manifests, between 2016 and 2017 and are periodically released every three weeks. After all seven have been released, there is going to be a book stitching all the pieces together.

Everything is custom made - from scratch - models, materials.
I welcome to watch the seventh one.

VII. Computer Generated Art
Computer Generated Art is set of two traditional Still Life Paintings created by new Technological Approaches. It depicts passion and beauty in Art and Painting. Love in Novel Technology Computer Algorithms, Research and Development enhancing possibilities of Digital Art.

Project has been done in Stylit accompanied by Corona renderer. Stylit is developed by Czech researchers - http://stylit.org/. Stylit is able to repaint painted material sphere onto any geometry by repeating its look and mostly stylization. I collaborated directly with the researchers to make this project happen. The project was finished on 19.7.2017 - the date of the video - and was put on hold because of license. Now can be published as I am licensed to use the Stylit technogloy being patent-pending by Adobe.

Fruit still life was done by sampling and creating huge number of material spheres from real high resolution still life paintings and then projected onto geometry by Stylit. Shadows were added by Corona pass.
Flower still life was done by sampling more stylized still life paintings and then projected onto geometry.
This process is something similar to creating material sphere in Corona but such material sphere is defined only by its overall appearance.
Corona was used to create guide passes - the Stylit´s input is not geomtery itself but rather passes - beauty, normal, refelction and so on.

Upcoming photo book release.

Hello guys, please see the sixth project of the collection almost there :) Below is the description, on the Behance (https://www.behance.net/gallery/52767055/Beautiful-Computer-Generated-Images-IV-Reflections) there are high-res pictures and cloud in 10K to download (for print).
I know I didnt make forest and mountain the best detailing, but I was desperate as I spent a lot of time (4 weeks I guess) working with terragen and trying to figure it out and make it work for what I wanted and had no more power to make those details better.

WARNING - this project was not done solely in Corona - I also used Terragen. Picture with the cloud is Terragen solely and picture with the mountain and water has mountaing and clouds + sky made in Terragen as well. Otherwise Corona was used.

So as per my new thread (https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php?topic=15592.new;topicseen#new) where I used real thickness for banana leaves, I think implementing thickness as a feature (something like additional displacement method) would be a pretty handy addition to the engine. The thickness with custom edges parameter can be used to enhance appearance of foliage, and can be used in many different scenarios as well like perforated surfaces etc.. I attached some examples of where this would be pretty much appliable and could save time and provide new functionality with enhanced visuall beauty.

The way I image this could work is:
1. Lets imagine we have a simple plane (no thickness) with applied material on it.
2. Material would have an opacity map (leaf opacity, perforated holes opacity, whatever) and displacement map (for leaves lets say).
3. In material editor, there would be a new set of parameters for real thickness - and those are: Thickness and Edge Chamfer (or Profile Curve for a better edges customization).
4. With these two parameters user would be able to enable real thicknes without doing a very time consuming modeling or very time consuming adjustment of opacity map to bend the edges by appying shell modifier to the object and using adjusted (blurred) opacity map do displace edges (my banana way).
5. Also it would be cool to be able to have a mask for edges to be able to alter their diffuse map separately (leaves having brighter edges attached) - this is important as well, as you can see, (banana leaves have a brighter/yellower edges what helps sell the thing as well).

So in other words:
1. Simple plane with opacity map

2. This is how it looks when rendered

3. Plus displacement map

4. With turned on "real thickness" with "round profile edges" in material editor. See that texture mapping is bednded only - working "properly".

What do you think?

Lets say I want to create a curb like this

Where only edges are heavily deformed. Deform edges script is not sufficient for such detail and I do not want to spend time in zbrush or do any complicated stuff. I would love to use bump/displacement for this by using some map I already have but map is applied on whole object - how can I limit the map to be smoothly applied on edges only? As far as I tried, CoronaAO, RoundEdges and Wire does not work in Bump/Displacement slot.
Thank you for suggestions.
