Hi everyone! We wanted to update you on what we're working on for the next daily build. As well as letting you know what we hope will be in the build, it will also be an insight into why things have taken us longer than we expected - we appreciate your patience.

Please remember these are plans only - work is ongoing and unexpected things can come up at any time.

  • We're working on including the new Core of Corona 6. Big changes there are that it will introduce the new Adaptive Environment Sampler, which totally removes the need for portals (basically, less noise in less time, without having to set up portals).
  • The new Core also makes things more portable between applications. In other words, in time it will allow greater compatibility between 3ds Max and Cinema 4D versions of Corona. This should help making the Corona Material Library available in C4D in the future.
  • We're working on adding the Corona Volume Grid. However, it requires a re-write - in 3ds Max, it is dependent on some parts of the 3ds Max code, and obviously we have had to "unentangle" it from any Max code so that it is self-contained. This has been a little more work than we anticipated, but it is progressing well.
  • Cinema 4D S22 was released, and we've set to work on that. We hope that it is mostly just a change to the installer rather than Corona code itself, but we want to make sure this is future-proof for when R22 comes out, and we're also looking into some materials showing as black in the new viewport. We should know more soon on whether we want to hold back the release for S22 until those black materials are fixed, or get S22 compatibility out there quickly and fix any outstanding issues later.
  • We've been working hard on the Node Editor for some time, and it has taken us longer than we expected - but it was a big task. We believe we are almost finished work on improving this! It's an almost total rework to the Shared Shader that underlies how the Node Editor allows sharing of shaders and materials. This should solve problems such as:
    • Some shader stops rendering, or renders only in the viewport but not in the VFB
    • The overall stability of the Shared Shader will be improved
    • The native Texture Manager should work without problems
    • And, it should reduce problems with Undo and Redo (which may have been causing problems in scenes with Shared Shaders, even though that may not have been obvious it was the cause).

Sorry that we can't give you an "expect the next daily on such-and-such a date" - for the last few weeks, we've been thinking we are close to release and will be set by the end of the week, but have always uncovered some additional major work required. We will release the next daily as soon as we can, though - and meantime, we'll keep you updated on what we are working on, and anything that is causing us unexpected delays.

Hi all,

we are releasing a daily build of the new version of Corona Renderer. Namely Corona Renderer 6 for Cinema 4D. This build contains a few fixes as well as some changes from the Corona rendering core. The core changes will be added in the following days to the changelog, but in the meantime, you can merilly test the new build.

Do note, however, that we removed the Corona Standalone from the early builds of Corona v6 for now, due to technical reasons. We will add it back before the final release, so stay tuned!

Changes in Corona Renderer 6 for Cinema 4D (Daily Build 2020-02-27) (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Pq54oK-EGac_z0VdV05VfsSsG54I1Qkn):

Edit: Updated with changes and fixes that were included with the switch to the new Corona rendering core.

  • Fixed:
    • Fixed crash in IR, when rendering with soft selection
    • Fixed rendering of projector shader
    • Fixed occasional freezes when dragging connections in material node system
    • Fixed blurring of caustics at the edge of the screen
    • Fixed issue where light mix/postprocessing settings in VFB where not accepting values if mouse was outside of the VFB window
  • Added:
    • Introduced a new way to activate corona - you can set your email & password or a path to the licensing server to environment variable CORONA_ACTIVATION:
      • For email and password, use format “email:password”
      • For licensing server address, use format “LS:address”
    • Added render stamp token %ptg which is replaced with the scene geometry preprocessing time (in milliseconds).
  • Changed
    • Temporarily removed Corona Standalone from the installer. We're currently doing a full rewrite of the Standalone code and it will be much faster if we don't need to maintain full backwards compatibility in every step during the development. The new version of standalone will be ready for v6 release.

[C4D] Daily Builds / Reporting daily build issues
« on: 2019-06-19, 20:59:35 »
Hello everyone!

I know that most of you are used to reporting the issues directly in the respective daily build threads (for example in the "Corona Renderer 4 for Cinema 4D daily build" thread) and that's fine by us.

But let's not forget that there is another way to report bugs and issues with daily builds - by creating a thread directly in this sub-forum! Such a report might actually be more visible than all those posts in the daily build thread. I would personally prefer having reports neatly separated issue by issue here.

Whatever method you choose is up to you, however, and we'll tend to all reports the same way we have always tried to.

tl;dr: Download and run the special Licensing Server (link below), if you have bought a commercial license and want to use the Beta versions
Special licensing server is no longer needed. Use licensing server from any newer version and it should license even beta versions just fine. (see text below for more info)

By popular request, we are releasing a way for the paying customers of the commercial version of Corona for C4D to fallback to the non-commercial versions of the plugin. The way this works is that you run a special Licensing Server and then you run the Cinema 4D with an older version of Corona of your choosing. If you have a valid subscription, your older Corona for C4D will then get a working license from our servers through the running Licensing Server.

In the future daily builds, this will work with the standard licensing server too, so this special Licensing Server is a temporary solution before we release a new daily build with this functionality inside. For now, you can also use this Licensing server instead of your standard Licensing Server. No need to use them both at the same time.

You can find the special Licensing server on our daily build Google drive folder, in the subfolder named "Beta licensing server", along with a readme with instructions on how to use it:

Corona Standalone / Corona Standalone 3 build
« on: 2019-02-25, 11:05:40 »
The latest build of a free version of Corona Standalone with Core 3 for Windows and Mac can be found here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/12bKiWzQPfvC5slZtJEjjV-Za2t1isgRV?usp=sharing

For now, this Standalone version should work as a replacement for the Corona for C4D Standalone, which is no longer available for free.

Please keep in mind that Corona Standalone is not a "studio" application with graphic user interface. It's only capable of rendering scenes saved using special exporters. For more info see: How to render using Corona Standalone?

Feel free to ask questions and send feedback in this thread or by contacting us at https://coronarenderer.freshdesk.com/support/tickets/new

Hi all,

We are releasing the first daily build of Corona Renderer 4 for Cinema 4D. This build contains some convenience fixes to the Corona Renderer 3 for C4D Hotfix 1, but the changes in the code were a little too big and dangerous for a hotfix release. We will eventually include these changes in the Corona Renderer 3 for C4D Hotfix 2 release, but only after they have been thoroughly tested in this daily build. Enjoy! :-)

It's now impossible to save animation frames as Corona EXR, which is especially problematic when you want to render multipass. This was originally reported here: https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php/topic,14159.0.html

tl;dr: Be as simple and descriptive as possible. Provide pictures, videos or scenes.

Hi everyone!

For people not used to the way software development works (but even for the experienced ones), it can be difficult to write a good bug report. So if you want your report to be understood well and processed in the quickest time possible, make sure to read and follow these simple rules:

  • Choose a descriptive topic title
When going through the forms, it helps us if we can identify the individual bugs by their description, so always write the titles so that it's obvious what the problem is from the title. As an example, "Crash when using normal shader inside layer shader" is great, whereas "HELP, please! I found a bug :-(" could actually mean that the bug will be processed later.
  • Ensure reproducibility
For a bug to be fixable, we need to be able to reliably reproduce it and later verify the solution when fixed. So if you report something like "in 5% of the cases if I do XY, the WZ will not work correctly", it is not really useful, whereas "if I do XY, then WZ always crashes" is much better. Of course, if you cannot reproduce it 100%, it's still better to write a bad bug report than nothing...
  • Simplify the circumstances
This cannot be stressed enough and people often tend to report with huge scenes or long set of steps to reproduce the bug. But it helps us immensely, if you take the time and find the simplest scenario where the bug happens.
  • Provide good "Steps To Reproduce"
"Steps To Reproduce", or STR in short, is simply a set of instructions to reliably reproduce the bug. It can be as simple as "1.) Create new scene; 2.) Create new material; 3.) Corona crashes!". We are also just people, so the shorter and easier to understand the STR is, the better! Also, it's great to try out your whole STR yourself to make sure it really causes the bug to appear.
  • Pictures or videos are great!
As CG programmers, we are very visual people, so one picture or a simple video is often worth a hundred words! It doesn't have to be anything fancy, as long as it shows what the problem is. But please bear in mind that often, we don't know the requirements that you have on your scene, so simply posting a picture and saying that "it is wrong!" is not very helpful. It is better to explain why the picture is wrong and what exactly it would look like if it was correct.
  • Uploading scenes is great!
Giving reliable STR is good, giving a scene where we can click and immediately see the problem is even better. Saving our time means we can fix more bugs in the same amount of time! Moreover, we can use the scene in our internal testing tools to ensure the bug never appears again. Note that we treat every scene that you send to us as confidential and if you request it, we can even delete the scene from our harddrives once we find the bug.
You can use the private uploader for the scenes, where noone will be able to see the scenes except for the Corona developers.
  • Describe your platform
Often a bug is specific to one Corona version, one OS, etc... So it always helps if you describe you platform in a very simple way. At least, say what OS you're using, what version of Cinema you have and what version of the Corona plugin (can be found in the about dialog) causes the bug.

Thanks for reading this far and for being such an enthusiastic community!
