Work in Progress/Tests / Re: dubcats secret little hideout
« on: 2025-07-15, 08:40:41 »
I remember you did a thread on virtual colour checkers.
How would that work with ACES Emulation?
Would you apply aces settings and your LUT and then use the output in lightroom to calibrate?
Colour management is all very new to me but its infinitely fascinating to get into the process of making sure my work output is accurate.

Hey!

I would capture a color checker passport at your current light intensity. Generate a camera profile. If your profile has a contrast curve, open it in 3DLUTCreator and remove it. This should give you a calibrated color and linear camera profile.
When you have a calibrated profile. The only thing you should care about is linear values. When it comes to real world albedos, we talk in linear %. If I tell you the brightest common paint is 94%, you should be able to input that value into "Value" in Corona Picker. But that is not how Corona Picker is working right now. So you have to convert 94% to sRGB. If you are thinking, why the hell do we have to gamma correct a linear value only to get a linear value, ask the Corona devs, it blows my mind every day. 94% is 97.2% sRGB, so this is the max real world scanned common paint value.

Another problem we have with the current Corona Picker is that the darkest common paint is "Jet Black" and it's 14,14,16 sRGB. Try to input these values into Corona Picker. You end up with 0,0,24 sRGB. This is a common problem when we try to sample real world values for products, the sRGB values might jump 10 sRGB. I'm using Vrays color map to fix this, because it let me adjust values separately with float values.

edit:

I haven't had much time to complete the last few guides on my site. But I want to share paint values with you guys as soon as possible, so I have remove all the unfinished stuff from the site.
I've only had time to add the 2019 Color Chart paints to the page, but have about 1 gazillion paints ready.
If you have a paint value, and are wondering how it would look with LRV and - IOR. Just post the values here, and I'll add them to the page when I get time.

How do you generate your profile?
Ive tried lightroom but it wont open exr and colour passport wont run on non raw formats.
3DLUT creator gives some really horrible results with the passport.

Is there any way you could give a slightly more in depth explanation of using it?
In terms of VFB setup, export format, and process to generate your DNT/LUT?

I still really want to know the correct workflow for this...

[Max] Daily Builds / Re: Are you still using the old VFB?

As someone who has come back to Corona for the first time since VFB 2 was implemented and someone who never really used Corona beyond dabbling, perhaps my take is slightly more objective.

I must say that the icons across the top of the VFB are very unintuitive. I find myself having to assess all the icons and go through a process of elimination before I know which button probably is the one I want. Although this only takes a second or two, it breaks flow and in general lowers my productivity compared to VFB 1.

General CG Discussion / Re: Rhino to 3DSMax
« on: 2022-11-21, 12:31:39 »
From my tests, it's no longer possible to export a clean and well-organized model from Rhino post Rhino 5.

Currently I run rhino 7 for compatibility and save down to rhino 5 for exporting. There was a small change in the obj exporter that means it's no good anymore. I have raised this issue on the Rhino forums, but I just get the forum-equivalent of blank-stares and the suggestions of how to work-around the problem just results in circular and contradictory logic.

In my opinion, in rhino 5, these are the best setting for exporting. It will give you object naming that is logical.

Hardware / Re: Ryzen 5950x build

Hi fellas,

Just built a 5950x workstation with essentially exactly the same specs as the others here. So far so good but I cannot get to 3600 with the ram. 3200 is the closest I can get and it seems this is a common problem...

Is anyone else facing this issue atm?

'scuse the hijack...

edit: two actually. One is a bit obvious...

Hey there,

I'm afraid this is really stretching the limit of my maxscript knowledge. If you head to http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/automultimatte and drop a comment petitioning the creator to update it, maybe he'll do so.  Sorry I can't help any more :(

I think I binned the scene because I was a couple of hours away from a deadline but my gratitude is for future problems :)

For me it's still a robust and more 'flexible' aerial perspective and/or volume fog solution in corona.

Except when you ask the converter to switch renderer to corona?

Ok i'll keep that in mind for next time. Odd that the converter didn't pick that up?

Hiya,

Just about threw my workstation out the window waiting for vrayRT or IPR to produce even a preview so I converted the scene to Corona but now I only get black material editor previews...
Just checked a different scene made with Corona and it works fine so this seems to be scene specific.

Restarted max, ran the converter again but no luck. Any ideas?

I use Sergo Pogosyan's Automultimatte script for vray on every job. Love it and have been missing it sorely with corona.
I hacked his vray script to work with Corona. Only works with CoronaMtl, CoronaLayeredMtl and CoronaLightMtl (plus the max standard mats that worked with the vray version of the script.)

Anyhow hopefully it's useful for some.

Here's the original script's scriptspot page for info and whatnot: http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/automultimatte

Upon further investigation, it seems that if the CoronaSun's target isn't perfectly aligned with the Daylight's compass then the sun angle is incorrect. Now that I know it's fine, but this could land someone in a lot of trouble if they don't realise it...

Hello there,

I always use a daylight system to make sure I'm rendering with plausible sun angles for a given site's location.
I noticed (mid-way through a project) that the CoronaSun now has a target. Interesting... Thankfully I tried moving the target to see what happened, and oh dear, it completely changed the angle of the sun, even though I'm using a daylight system... It should all be locked down, shouldn't it? (unless in manual mode).

I've been switching over to a vraysun to see if the CoronaSun matches vraysun and nope, it doesn't seem to care where I put the target or the Daylight compass, it's completely different from the vraysun result.

Whats the deal here? This seems like a remarkably dangerous bug if it is indeed a bug.

Edit: well no other sun but the coronaSun produces direct light it seems in Corona, so in fact I have no way to be sure the coronaSun is in the right position...
