[Max] I need help! / Re: Tone Mapping Problems
« on: 2024-04-09, 12:41:46 »
Thanks Frood much appreciated!

Yes it appears that is the issue having just done a couple of tests - just so weird how its only started happening now! The suggestions in the second forum link you posted are helpful - I think ultimately I need to tweak workflow slightly by having settings i revert back to everytime before I start a render and then doing post in the VFB after rendering, as opposed to ad hoc tweaking things before / as the render is in progress.

Thanks again.

[Max] I need help! / Tone Mapping Problems
« on: 2024-04-09, 11:47:25 »
Hello,

I am losing my mind with issues I am having with the tone mapping inconsistencies! If I render a scene (or use interactive renderer) and amend the tone-mapping with desired settings, the result is then completely different next time I hit render! It doesn't just appear to be an exposure thing - the white balance changes and the gamma sometimes appears different as well. I have tried everything including using the camera settings to override the tone mapping as an override but I still get the inconsistencies.

So for example, I hit render and then tweak the exposure / highlight compression to suit (for ease, lets say exposure from 0.0 to 3.0). But then if I stop and hit render again with the exposure on 3.0 in the VFB, it appears like the exposure is at 0.0 again even though the number says 3.0 still. As I mentioned other bits appear to get thrown off as well. The screen shots attached should show this (as shown, settings are exactly the same).

I've never had this before and don't understand what is causing it - I've tried literally everything I can think of including re-installing but I am truly stumped.

Thanks very much for any help.

Graham

thanks for your reply romullus, it was not fully black and white but having looked into it further it turns out in was the Alpha setting with the Corona Sky itself that was causing the issue

[Max] I need help! / Background Transparency and Alpha
« on: 2023-12-01, 17:23:46 »
Hi there,

I am currently having a problem with saving a PNG with a transparent background - no matter what settings I try the png always has a background. The issue appears to solely be using orthographic camera projection, but I have done this render type previously (even on the same file as I'm having the problems!) and have never had problems before.

I am grateful for any help anyone can provide.

Thanks

[Max] General Discussion / Render Farm Single Frame
« on: 2020-10-11, 21:53:24 »
Hi there,

I have a number of projects that I need to render 'final images' for. So essentially, whilst I often do these overnight on my laptop, there are a number of deadlines that have come at once so this isn't really an option.

A typical final image I do takes 8-9 hours on average which equates to about 100 passes.

I am not the most technical minded but as I understand it, the way online render farms work mean that it is really efficient time-wise for animations as each frame is effectively sent to different nodes so more than one frame can get rendered at once.

I am ideally looking for somewhere that I can get a single frame back within 30 mins approx. The two farms that I have tried are GarageFarm and RebusFarm. Both seem to work well for single frames and the cost is fairly similar.

I like how GarageFarm splits a single image into a number of strips and then composites automatically and thought I was onto a winner with this as the return was fairly quick. However the compositing doesn't work with the Bloom and Glare. The very helpful Tomas from their technical support said that the BloomGlare pass could be rendered separately and then composited in Photoshop, however the issue here is that the Bloom and Glare pass doesn't match what is visible in the beauty pass, which I found a bit odd and obviously not GarageFarms fault. But this makes it difficult when test renders in the VFB using the Bloom and Glare effects can't be replicated because of how the BloomGlare pass comes out.

In regards to RebusFarm - this worked well and a projected 9 hour render on my machine was returned in about 2 hours. This service was very easy to use and result was as expected, however the time is a bit longer than what I hoped for.

Maybe I am being overly ambitious, but I was just wondering if anyone knew of any render farms that have a quick turnaround on single images? I don't really have the time to do a trial and error of all the Farms listed on the Corona website, so it would be much appreciated if anyone has any first hand experience of ones that can achieve this quick turnaround. Ideally it would be one that has a plugin within 3DS Max 2020 like GarageFarm and Rebus Farm do.

Thanks very much in advance.

Ok thanks will try and get my head around distance map as haven't used it before!

If you have any helpful links / tutorial explaining how this works related to what I am trying to do that would be much appreciated :)

Thanks

Many thanks for your reply - the slice modifier worked well - it took about 20 mins to generate on all objects though as there were a few thousand!

Do you have any thoughts on multiple sections in a model or is the only way to move the slice plane each time to where i want the section cut? The Corona Camera clipping obviously works well for multiple orthographic cameras at each section plane, but of course I then have my original issue with lighting.

The other option you mentioned with the shadow casting is also something I hadn't thought of so will bear this in mind in future. The only thing is that I often work with Archicad / Revit models in MAX that are often very complex so bit of a pain to go around and find all the objects that need excluding, particularly on multi-storey buildings. And then if model gets updated I have to do it all again!

Thanks again - much appreciated

[Max] I need help! / Camera Clipping / Slicing
« on: 2020-05-19, 16:08:18 »
Hi there,

I have a tight deadline and need to create a section of a scheme. I have got the camera clipping to work, however the clipping doesn't allow sunlight getting to internal rooms which I hoped it would. So an internal bathroom towards the middle of the building is effectively plunged into darkness. Is there a way to allow the environment lighting to work as if the whole model was sliced? It is a complex model so the slice modifier keeps crashing it as there are a huge amount of objects I need to cut through.

Many thanks

Graham
