[C4D] I need help! / Re: Controllable Shadow Catcher Spread

Thank you! It’s always great to see how others are getting this kind of work done. Thank you for taking the time to share the setup :-)

Thank you.

Any suggestions for easily getting a ground shadow pass separately from the beauty pass?

[C4D] I need help! / Controllable Shadow Catcher Spread
« on: 2025-05-22, 16:49:45 »
Can anyone suggest a way to control a shadow a bit more? e.g. under a car, using the Shadow Catcher? I always get a shadow massive spread over the geometry I'm using as the catcher and get harsh edges if I reduce the geometry down to try and help contain it (as I can't feather the opacity edges in a shadow catcher material).

I need a transparent cutout image with the edges of the shadow fading out for using in comp afterwards. Any tips greatly appreciated! Thanks :-)

Ticket Request #372734 created...

HA! Me neither!

Must not have pressed submit :-(

I've had to roll back to Update 1 Hotfix 1 as texture sizes were massive on some materials in my scene. Not sure if its to do with the triplanar node. No time to try and fix right noe so just rolled back and all is back to normal. I've opened a ticket with support too. Same on MacOS and Windows.

(I know my screenshot of the "wrong" one isn't fully resolved - but I was in a rush – but  you can tell that its much larger tiling)

Hardware / Re: New Mac Studios Coming
« on: 2025-03-13, 08:58:30 »
I’m currently trying to work out the real-world CPU multi-core difference - as I need to spend wisely too - but have been waiting for the new generation of Studio for a long time - I need a machine with decent multi-core CPU for Corona but also decent hardware enabled ray tracing for Redshift. The ability to spec the M4 Max Studio with 128GB of memory is great for heavy Corona scenes (it’s where my M1Max MBP gets the most upset with its 64GB).

Of course if money was no object the a flavour of M3 Ultra would be best but I feel that the M4 Max won’t be too shabby…

We’ve all suspected there’s something going on with the Apple Silicon implementation…would be good to get to the bottom of it. Maybe it’s the Apple Silicon port of the Embree raytracing libraries, the “clever” memory management, bitmap processing libraries or just something weird… who knows?

As @masterzone says - that error is usually a missing plugin on the TR client.

I think the advantages of adding a 4x slower machine (+ network overhead) might make it borderline pointless though. I guess you may see advantages on some very large, long render jobs.

[C4D] Daily Builds / Re: Fast loading now...

Hasn't the forum been full of C4D bitmap shader vs Corona Bitmap Shader issues over the last year? It seems to have been.

[C4D] Daily Builds / Re: V12 RC1 - New VFB UI / UX

I'm pretty much liking the new VFB - mostly now we can dock it in C4D (a long requested feature).

I had hoped the other annoying feature would have gone away - the dropdowns on the render button. It has always been probelmatic - especially when the machine is under heavy load - if even slightly unresponsive the wrong menu item can be easily selected. It would be MUCH better to just have all those buttons separated out - especially now there is all that space on the left with the other icons.

NDAs here too. That's what happens to me. I've got multiple layers of materials that have bitmap masks - so guessing its maybe something to do with bitmap linking... my masks get lost and I have to reconnect them.

This has always happened to me with layer materials.

I honestly would say those results aren't bad - a 12 core pretty much head to head with an 18 core machine does show some modern gains as clock speeds aren't massively different on the new stuff.

Just sheer number of cores on the cpu - so best of both worlds… in theory, of course!
