Hardware / Re: Workstation vs "Gaming" machine

Thank you guys, your feedback is much appreciated. I share the same opinion. I think he thought if it works for Revit it must work for 3dsMax as well, unfortunately it's not the case.

Hardware / Workstation vs "Gaming" machine
« on: 2015-05-21, 03:00:25 »
Hi guys,

Recently I moved from CG to architectural office. Since I am still going to do fair amount of 3d work, I send them specs for the machine I need. I wanted something similar to what we used in my previous office, although slightly under powered. Here are the specs:
Asus X99-A ATX LGA2011-3
i7 5820K 3.3GHz (with possibility to change for 5960x)
Asus GeForce GTX 970 4GB STRIX
G.Skills Ripjaws 32GB DDR4-2400 Memory
EVGA 750W
Samsung  850 EVO SSD
Thermaltake Water 3.0 Ultimate 99.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler

However, the IT guy from the new office changed it to, saying that certified graphics and xeon cpu will make professional workstation and better performing machine :
Xeon E5 2630 v3 2.4GHz
Quadro K2200
EVGA 850W PSU

I really have limited knowledge regarding computer hardware, so I would like to hear you opinion guys?
By the way, I am using 3d max 2014 and both Corona 1.00.02 and vray 3.1

P.S. I experience noticeable setback with viewport performance, it dropped roughly 40% compared to GTX 780Ti I used in my previous office. I am not sure if it's because of Quadro or it can be something else...

Thank you,
Ilija

Thanks for the replay, and for the HDRi as well, it is a really nice surprise :)
I actually have this HDRi in my library, I downloaded it for free from hdri-locations.com. I can see that you did desaturation and made contrast smaller.
Anyway you achieved good result, just keep up in the same way :)

Thanks again,
Ilija

Really nice set of renders Ivaylo, I love the white balance that you achieved.
Can I ask you which HDRi did you use for this project, is it custom made or one that is already on the market?

Keep up the good work,

Ilija

Agree, not working with latest build

Is this camera extension something that can be downloaded as a plugin or it's going to be integrated in the next Corona release?
Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for your answer, it does help a lot.
Airplanes are looking awesome as well, seems like you mastered visualization with corona :).

All the best,
Ilija

Sorry for my ignorance, but does portals make big difference in image quality? Same like in vray for example?

Hi,

Amazing renders, good composition and extraordinary lightning :). May I ask you did you use HDRI or corona sun/sky for lightning, the result is obviously perfect? And one more question, how long it took for one render, as I can see everything is noiseless?

Thanks,
Ilija

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replay.
Here is the model of the glass chandelier : http://www.designconnected.com/lighting/pendant/Random-Light_p1781 . I just changed material to glass. I guess that shell would correct things but I didn't mind at the time.

I could play with a highlights a bit, maybe it would look better. Although I wanted to keep workflow as correct as possible, I read from Ravalanche that playing with highlights actually means that you are switching from linear to reinhard (in vray sense :) ). As I said, I don't know anything about corona yet, so every advice is more than welcome :).

Thanks,
Ilija

Hi,

Thanks for the replay :).
I am not sure what the HW means, sorry, as I said I am new to corona. And render time, I just left it over night, but when I checked it after 2h it was still grainy. Although I have old computer, i5 2500k.

Thanks,
Ilija

Hi guys,

Here is my first experience with corona. I used sun/sky system, with sky in color correction for softer lightning. Since I don't know practically anything about parameters, I just use things I found on the forum, PT for primary solver an HD for secondary, with 1024 samples. Let me know what you think and what could be improved.

Thanks,
Ilija

Great renders goose, I am really impressed.
I have only one question, did you use HDRI or corona daylight system? I am still in the process of switching from vray to corona and I am trying to understand the basic workflow.
