General CG Discussion / Re: low poly trees
« on: 2024-09-14, 07:34:02 »
Gosh i'm dumb!!

I checked all the materials again, and found out, that I forgot to delete the displacement map from 2 of the tree trunks.
No wonder it too so long.

Case closed.
Sorry.

Thanks for your effort!

The problem isn't ram nor render time in my case, but the parsing time.
I have 4000 instances (7 different proxies) scattered with forest pack, and it takes 20s to start the rendering.
I now tested the same scene with an override material, and it starts in ~2s.

So you are right. It's not the geometry, but the material.

Are there any no goes for materials in such scenes?
Here is my Material btw:

Ah! I found a good example for what i'm after ;)

What kind of trees were used here?
If there is a good tutorial on how to handle such scenes, I would also really appreciate any help!

Thank you!

General CG Discussion / low poly trees
« on: 2024-09-13, 19:22:25 »
Hello everybody!

Can anyone recommend a good collection of low poly trees? Preferably a mix of common europen trees.
Those trees should be used for a distance of over a few hundred meters (on mountains most of the time) and still look decent.
"Maxtree Plant Models Vol 47 Low Poly" look good but ~50000 polys/ tree, seems way too much for my purpose.

I know it would be best to have a photo of the site at that point, but it's sometimes not possible to get one.

Thank you,
Tobias

@maru
thx. that really sounds a bit weird to do, but i will give it a try :D

@juraj
"...but one that would change to current value from Realistic."
that would be the best solution i think, but i would also be happy with a filter color :)

ok. thanks everyone

i guess i have to live with it then and use the light mix workaround

@juraj yes. that would be a great option

Thanks for moving the post

@dj_buckley
realistic color changes with the position of the sun.
if i just want minor changes to the color of the sun, i have to find the color first (via direct input or kelvin).

@romullus
that's what i usually do, but as mentioned above, i then have to find the color first.

what would be great for example:
a) the color of direct input or kelvin always shows the realistic color of the sun (if unselected). if i then switch to direct, i start with the current color.
b) a simple adjustment as in the light mix

thanks

Hello everyone!

Is there a way to adjust the color of a corona sun without using light mix?

Sometimes it would be really great, to have this option without using direct input and starting from pure white.

Thank you & best regards,
Tobias

Thanks for the reply!

Ok. Too bad :/ I thought it could be implemented pretty easy.
But it would be pretty awesome to use preview rendering for preview renders :P
It would really save a ton of time and make IR a lot more powerful.

Thanks anyway

hi everyone

not sure if i'm overlooking something, and i'm sure there has been discussions about it, but in my opinion it would be really great to have an option to link the IR window resolution to my render resolution.
the problem is that you can't lock the IR window resolution (unless you make full screen).
some clients (and also myself) just need quick test images for multiple cameras, sun positions... and i often have the problem that if i move the IR window, i change the window size and therefore change the resolution.
it's also a problem if i close 3dsmax, reopen it and want to render in the same resolution.
i hope you understand my problem.

maybe under system settings? with a changeable number attached
for example:
1=use full render resolution
0.5=use 50% render resolution
0.25=use 25% render resolution
0=deactivate (this could be default if people don't like the idea)

thank you and hope you can fulfill my dream :)

Hi everyone

First of all thanks again Juraj for your help!

I wanted to share my experience with my build. Maybe this helps someone.

my system:

case: meshify s2
board: Asus TRX-40 Pro
cpu: 3970x
ram: 64GB gskill ripjaws V 3600Mhz (F4-3600C16Q-64GVKC)
cooler: noctua nh-u14s tr4-sp3 + Noctua NF A-15
graphic card: RTX 2060 Super Evo Turbo
psu: bequiet straight power 11, 1000W premium

first psu made crackling noises when turned on and off so i had to get a new one. works good now, but i'm not sure if it's the best choice.
latest bios update was needed to recognize the ram
one of the fans (not sure yet which on) sounds a bit metallic (don't know how to explain it) but it's ok for me
system running smooth so far. fingers crossed
cpu temps are around 40°C, 80°C under load
ram is running at standard 2133Mhz for now
corona bench 30s

compared to my previous system it's a beast! :)

best
tobias

Alright

Thank you again for your input!
I will do some more research on the RAM

Have a good evening and take care,
Tobias

Hello Juraj

Thank you so much for your time.

I'll then go with the
Asus GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER TURBO-RTX2060S-8G-EVO
or
GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER GAMING OC 3X 8G

Would you go with the Asus because of the Blower design?

Hm. Ok.
Does this mean I only run into issues if I want to upgrade to 128GB?
Unfortunately the memory support for the ASUS Prime TRX40-Pro doesn't give me a lot of options.
The only option for RAM with Micron Chip (if that's what you suggested) would be the Kingston HyperX Fury RGB DIMM Kit 64GB, DDR4-3200, CL16-18-18 (HX432C16FB3AK4/64)
But I think it's a little to big for the Noctua and the socket support is 1,2,4 (which means they are not tested for all 8 slots if i understand correctly)

Thank you again,
Tobias

Hardware / Re: Threadripper Builds
« on: 2020-03-02, 09:12:53 »
good morning everyone!

first of all: thanks for this helpful thread!

I'm trying to configure a new workstation, but I'm still uncertain with a few choices.
This will be my first PC I configure on my own, so I hope there is no big mistake in there.

My configuration so far:

Case: FRACTAL DESIGN DEFINE 7
  or should I go with the FRACTAL DESIGN MESHIFY S2 because of better airflow?
  I'm a bit scared that the MESHIFY S2 will be louder and get more dust inside
CPU: THREADRIPPER 3970x
Mainboard: GIGABYTE TRX40 AORUS MASTER
  or should I go with a ATX board MSI TRX40 PRO WIFI for example?
Graphic Card: SAPPHIRE RADEON RX 5700 XT NITRO+
  or should I go with Nvidia because of the Radeon driver issues?
RAM: CORSAIR DIMM 64GB DDR4-3200 Quad-Kit, CL16, Vengeance LPX
  will there be a big difference for the CPU between 64GB and 128GB?
Cooler: NH-U14S TR4-SP3
  I know there is no really perfect solution for cooling the CPU yet...
  I heard that you can add an additional Noctua NF-A15.
  do you think I should go with the dual tower solution?
  or probably even waiting with buying the PC till there is a proper solution?
  cooling the cpu is still the point i'm most unhappy with.
SSD01: SAMSUNG 970 EVO 500 GB
SSD02: SAMSUNG 860 QVO 2 TB
Power: BE QUIET! STRAIGHT POWER 11 Platinum 1000W

Thanks in advance for your tipps
