General CG Discussion / From Allplan to 3ds Max
« on: 2021-01-10, 17:56:07 »
Hi there,

I'm trying to figure out what's the best way to go when exporting from Allplan to 3ds Max. Already tried in 3DS format, but it doesn't interpret the scale well and the model looks very strange (I cannot orbit or zoom in).

Also gave a try to IFC format, importing it into Sketchup, but it does not interpret the scale correctly either.

Does anyone know what I should do? Thanks!

Thank you cexec, it works just fine. The exported file is very heavy in comparison with a .FBX file but the problem with FBX is that some elements look very distorted when importing it into 3ds max, I don't know why. Do you adjust any parameter when the OBJ dialog comes up in 3ds max?

Thanks a lot, I owe you one!

Nobody? Please, this is a bit urgent. I am dealing with an Archicad model from a client and we have a very tight deadline.

Thanks again.

General CG Discussion / Exporting from Archicad to 3DS

Hi guys,

How do you usually export your models from Archicad to 3ds Max? I am dealing with a quite heavy .PLA document and the exported .3DS file doesn't work as it should into 3ds Max. Some faces seem to be coplanar in the perspective view (looks fine in ortographic view though, don't know why).  I also tried to export it in .FBX file, resulting in a much cleaner file but some elements change their possitions and the model goes crazy...

Any advice?

Thanks :)

Hardware / Re: Cooler for Threadripper 1950x

After seeing some reviews I opted for the NH-U14S TR4-SP3, which behaves about 5-6 degress less in stress tests in comparison with the U12.

These guys from Noctua don't stop surprising me, it's great to see how this air cooling solution works even better than some much more expensive water cooling systems...

Hi guys,

I'm building my workstation and I'm trying to purchase everything at the same store. They've run out of the NOCTUA NH U14-STR4SP3, but have some NHU12-STR4SP3 in stock. Is there enough difference between these two to worry about? The price difference is only 10€, it's all about the stock.

Thank you!

Last question on this,

How should I put a couple of workstations working together? I'm looking at some switches and prices vary from just 15€ to over 200€. Which aspects should I consider before buying?

[Max] I need help! / Re: White edges when using HDRI
« on: 2017-11-02, 21:13:45 »
i've noticed that it also happens to me when rendering exteriors so I guess that it can be something that I'm doing wrong with the HDRI. I'm loading it as a CoronaBitmap with a Colorcorrection applied. Is this correct?

[Max] I need help! / White edges when using HDRI

Hello guys,

How can I avoid the white edges around objects when using HDRI for interior renderings? I have ticked the Override background with black color and tried to save in EXR and PNG without success.

Thanks!

Thank you Juraj, I forgot to mention that I'm  on a budget.

What about this build?

- AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950x 3.4GHz. 1019€.
- MSI X399 SLI PLUS or ASROCK X399 TAICHI (both of them are under 350€).
- Fractal Design Define R5. 123€. (the one that you mentioned is not available in the store where I'm purchasing the rest of the components. I prefer to buy all the stuff from the same place as they would build the workstation for me for very little money).
- PSU. Seasonic Prime Platinum 850W. 200€
- NOCTUA NH-U14STR4-SP3. 80€.
- SAMSUNG 960 EVO NVMe M.2 SSD PCI-e 500GB. 239€
- Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4 3200 PC-25600 2X16GB CL16. 419€. As you've already said, RAM is ridiculously overpriced so I intend to buy a couple of these to put them working together with the two that I already have.

TOTAL: 2430€.

What would you change of this build?

Thank you again!

Hi Juraj,

I'm also interested in building a new workstation based on a Threadripper 1950X. Appart from the CPU, which specific components would you go for today?

I'd like to know about the following:

- Motherboard.
- PSU.
- RAM. Which one should I buy to get the maximum out of the CPU performance?
- SSD.
- GPU. (I already have a 1080ti from my old workstation so I would probably continue using it)
- Cooler.
- Box.

I also intend to put this workstation rendering together with my old one (5820k). How should I connect these two to make distributed rendering?

Huge thanks!

General CG Discussion / Vectorworks to 3ds Max
« on: 2017-09-12, 10:43:16 »
Hello folks,

I've been given a Vectorworks 3d model and don't really know what's the best way to export it to 3ds Max. The 3d model is very well organized by layers and I'd like to keep them as they are.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

I love the neutral lighting here. Did you use an HDRI map? If so, where did it come from?

Thank you!

IKEA has all of their furniture modeled. I don't know why they don't set it for free to download since probably they would sell more. Finally I had to model it from a similar one. If anyone needs it just ask me for it by PM.

Thank you all!
