Hey, great setup you're planning — I’ve built a few Corona-focused workstations recently with the 9950X, so here’s my take based on real-world use:

Ryzen 9 9950X vs 9950X3DX
If you're using Corona Renderer, the regular 9950X is the better choice for the price, check corona benchmark results for 9950x and the x3d, if money is no problem go for it

Personally in one build i used 2x48 G.Skill Ripjaws 5200mhz and it works fine
96GB (2×48GB) at 6000MT/s CL30 is more than enough for most 3ds Max + Corona scenes, even with Forest Pack, proxies, or large textures.

4×48GB might sound tempting for capacity, but it’s slower (more stress on memory controller), and you likely won’t use that much unless you're working on extremely complex or layered scenes.

Better to go with higher speed and leave room for a future upgrade if needed.

PCIe 5.0
Not essential right now. Even the RTX 4090 barely uses PCIe 4.0 bandwidth.

PCIe 5.0 M.2 SSDs are nice but for the cost are not worth it at the moment, you almost pay double the pricee per TB, 990 pro 100euro and 9100pro 200euro, maybe in the future hwen prices have dropped you go for it
If you’re building long-term and the board includes it without a huge price jump, it’s a plus — otherwise, not critical.

9950X runs hot at full load, especially in Corona where all cores are maxed.
High-end air coolers like NH-D15 can handle it, but expect high temps and more fan noise.

A 360mm AIO like I have used Arctic Liquid Freezer III on my 9950x gives you better headroom, quieter performance, and is worth it if you do long renders.

Summary:

Stick with the 9950X, not the X3D
Go 2×48GB 6000 CL30 for speed and stability
PCIe 5.0 is nice but optional
Use a 360mm AIO cooler for better temps

Hi everyone,

I’ve encountered a recurring issue when adjusting values in the Post or LightMix tabs inside Corona VFB. Sometimes, I try to enter values manually (either via the top number row or the numeric keypad), and it simply doesn’t register certain numbers—notably the digits 2 and 8.

It doesn’t happen consistently, but when it does, the only workaround is to click away or reopen the VFB.

The issue has occurred on three completely different PCs, with different hardware and fresh Corona + 3ds Max installations.

I'm using the latest versions of Corona Renderer (13.0) and 3ds Max (2024 and 2026.1).

Because of this consistency across systems, I believe it’s likely a Corona UI-level bug and not related to my hardware, input device, or keyboard.

Has anyone else experienced this?
Would love to hear if there’s a known fix or if the dev team is aware of it.

What about this one,

Ryzen 9 9950X
G.Skill Ripjaws 96GB DDR5 5200mhz *plan to double it ata later moment)
Gigabyte Windforce RTX 5060
Samsung 990 Pro 2Tb SSD,
Arctic Liquid Freezer III Pro,
beQuiet Straight Power 12 850 80+ Platinum
beQuiet Shadow Base 800 case.

I had initially ordered the Gigabyte B650 AORUS ELITE AX V2 because of its solid build, good VRMs, and my past experience with B550 + 5950X, which has always been stable. The B650 seemed like a safe and balanced option.
However, since delivery is delayed, I’m considering switching to the Gigabyte X870 EAGLE WIFI7. It costs about €50 more, but offers USB4, dual PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots, newer BIOS support for Ryzen 9000, and Wi-Fi 7.
I don’t plan on using GPU rendering or dual Gen5 SSDs anytime soon, but I do value long-term reliability and smooth performance under heavy CPU loads.

Do you think it’s worth switching, or should I stick with the B650?

Thanks Adam,
Unfortunately i'm outside EU and customs apply if I order on amazon and bumps the price by 20%.

And localy with the specs that you sent, the price was 1300Euro after keeping the GPU with the GT 710, but with the 5950x goes 900Euro with the GT 710, and I think I will stay with the 5950x, I don't know if spending 400euro is justified, I may be wrong eh.
Keeping in mind that I already have a 5950x since 2022 and now I will have the upgraded pc with the 9950x as a main workstation and two 5950x, so idk haha.

Thank you for your input

Hi,
I’m building a workstation for Corona Renderer 13 in 3ds Max, mainly for architectural interiors and exteriors.

Also had another thing in mind

My current main system is a Ryzen 9 5950X + 64GB DDR4 + RTX 3060, and I’ve just ordered the workstation with Ryzen 9 9950X + 96GB DDR5 + RTX 5060, which will soon take over as my primary machine.

Now I’ve come across a solid deal on another 5950X, and I’m considering building a third PC, very similar to my current one — slightly improved in storage and airflow.
Initially, I’d use it as a Corona DR render node, but in the near future it might serve as a dedicated workstation for a potential assistant or collaborator, or just as a flexible extra system in a growing studio setup.
Here’s the build, available locally for around €1,050:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X – €330
Motherboard: MSI B550-A PRO – €115
RAM: 32GB DDR4 3600MHz (already owned) + buying 32GB more to make 64GB – €65
SSD: Samsung 990 Pro 1TB PCIe 4.0 – €115
GPU: MSI RTX 3050 6GB VENTUS 2X OC – €190
PSU: be quiet! System Power 10 650W – €110
Case: be quiet! Silent Base 601 – €135
Cooler: Arctic Liquid Freezer III 360mm – brand new, still sealed – €0 (already owned)

My thinking:
This setup would help offload CPU-heavy renders, shorten delivery times, and support a future team setup. I know the GPU is weak, but it's fine for CPU-only Corona DR. I’m not trying to future-proof in terms of platform, just build something cost-effective and reliable that still holds strong performance for the next 3–5 years.
Would you go ahead with this build at this price, or invest elsewhere?
I’m curious how others see the long-term value of a third PC in a solo/small-studio workflow.

Appreciate any input.
