[Max] General Discussion / Ram Usage 1.4
« on: 2016-09-29, 21:24:51 »
Hi,

So i tried version 1.4  (i've been a licensed user up until 1.3, been away and planning on becoming one again soon). After loading an old scene and pressed render i get this running out of ram message, over and over again. It seems strange to me since i rendered the same scene (animation) with 1.3 with no problem and had only half the ram i have now. Is this a common problem with this version that will be fixed in 1.5 or what is up? The scene is an animation with hair and fur (3ds native) but as i said, same scene, more ram - new corona version.

Any feedback or knowledge on this would be appreciated.

Thanks, dubcat !
I did it as you wrote , but I have also noticed that the stones have an wet-look.
When I add glosiness map into reflection slot, then it' looks more realistic. Is it correct ?

Thanks to your reply
Test renderings and shader images are also attached :

Brr, do you mind sharing the settings of the plane you have the displacement texture on. I'm interested in if you also use the corona displacement mod and how tight your polygons are. Your renders look amazing!

Ok I know about plugins like maxtoae and that's too expensive for me especially since I know so little about it. I do also know that there's some scripts working with rpf files but I don't think it would be as effective as tracking a 3d element with custom track points. But if you know more I would love to know.

Getting the position and rotation based on the axis of a specific object wouldn't make it easier if say I would like to add a decal or some small detail to a specific part of that object?

I'm away from my studio and a pc a couple of weeks but after that I will evaluate some workflows and see how a tracking ctexelement works out. Right know all I've got is a Mac...

Hmm, I can see how that would work with a moving camera in a static environment, but what if there's moving objects involved?

Hi,

Is there any possibility to render a pass with another material eg checkerboard or a custom one. I would like to render out something that would facilitate tracking inside of ae or nuke, so a material with tracking points would be preferable. Maybe I'm missing out on some basic technique for this but it was an idea I had since I'm mixing a lot of cg with actual footage.

Hardware / Re: Building a render node

Just curious, how much does one gain in speed with one reder node/slave with the specs mentioned above? I was thinking of building The 500$ render node from the pcfoo site but a bit unsure if it's better to go for one more expensive unit as above or a cheaper one and then add more of those further on.

I see, very helpful! Thank you!

Nice! I have struggled with getting realistic water/ocean displacement in corona. How did you manage to use the  fd ocean text, I thought it needed the vray displacement modifier.. Do you mind sharing your displacement setup?

Thanks!

General CG Discussion / Re: Fake Hdr

Thanks, yes i will certainly have to do some studying and training before shooting hdri for ibl on set! Regarding compositing 3d into photos that lack an .hdr - using RAW image to get some color variance and reflections is just what I'm after. I know it won't get close to using a .hdr but its a good start. Then photoshop will have to do the rest :).

I found an article by Jay Weston on cgarchitect http://www.cgarchitect.com/2013/12/effects-of-hdr-vs-mdr-on-image-based-lighting where he had some tricks on merging the sun from an hdri into an mdr. Worth trying!

Ok, sorry for being unclear. The cg 3d world is pretty new to me, i've build all my models/scenography afk.

Anyway, I like the long answer better! I will try to find those papers + make some tests based on your solution/idea.

General CG Discussion / Fake Hdr

Hello,

It is my first topic here but i've been following this forum for a while and have been trying out Corona for a couple of months now.

Im wondering if anyone knows of a good way to fake/build a hdr image from a regular photo in raw format. Or if theres any other way to simulate the light/color conditions when compositing a 3d object in a 2d still. Im a photographer and i want to put some 3d elements into my images. I will get a fisheye lens so that i can take som hdr panoramas in the future but i would love to be able to work with some images in my old catalog.

Any tips or hints would be much appreciated!

Thanks
