General CG Discussion / Re: Corona vs Vray in 2022

If I can chime in here;

Concerning your RAM comment: I too have had issues with RAM usage (I even upgraded to 128gb recently). But an ABSOLUTE life saver and game changer has been the plug-in "Bitmap Resizing/Tracking".

Possibly the best 18€ (or so) I have spent in my long 3D career.

It has amazed me at how RAM intense simple JPEG loading takes in Corona. Reducing a few unnecessary 4k textures down to 1k saves a LOT of RAM. And this plug-in does it automatically, intelligently and quickly.

I can't recommend this highly enough.

To answer your original query: I think, generally speaking, vray and Corona are completely interchangeable. Neither is better or worse. You won't get better results out of one over another. As always it's up to the user, the amount of effort etc etc. Don't get me wrong, I love Corona, but I think for 99% of cases Vray would work just as well.

Thank you i am going to buy the plugin also i did not know that 4k textures matter that much. Because i am using megascans 4k textures all over my project so that might causing a problem. Your comments made me realize that im seriously bad at optimizing. Seems like switching from real time renderers does that.

We have been searching for 2 weeks and looks like everyone is using Corona Renderer for archviz. Even on Instagram there are 2 pages dedicated to Corona Renderer with 80k followers yet a very small account for Vray. And we did not like the Vray results that much.

The main question here is that can we achieve same results with Vray or will they always be slightly worse than Corona Renderer? And should we switch to Vray for Vantage and big scenes?

I guess that's because Corona covers basically the same as V-ray do (in archviz field), but costs significantly less and arguably is easier to learn and use, so most archvizers switched from V-ray to Corona. In capable hands, both renderers can produce top notch results.

That might be the case. I did not think much about that because 3dsmax is expensive compared to price of Vray or Corona. We design with Revit and Rhino and those are essential for us. But 3dsmax is not mandatory we are only buying it for rendering. If we learn Vray maybe we can switch to Vray with Revit and buy an Enscape license additionaly instead of 3dsmax. I know max has big impact on renderings(Forest Pack, High poly models etc.) but we don't even do our modelling in Max. I love Corona renderer tho. Maybe there will be a Revit for Corona with same price tag in the future.

I think perhaps you need to look into ways of optimising your 3ds max scenes. Using proxies, instances, displaying heavy poly objects as boxes etc, the workflow is quite different to what you might have dealt with in Lumion.

Upgrading to 64gb of ram will surely help too, Corona is quite RAM hungry compared to other engines.

From our side, we work on huge masterplans and terrains, even with very cautious optimisation our scenes often are much larger that 1gb, and yet we cannot really complaint much about Corona performance.

Thank both of you for your answers! I think i should learn better how to optimize things because we have worked on a small restaurant project with some terrain around recently. And .max file was 6.5 GB and you are saying more than 1gb for a big project.

We don't have the option to work on certain angles. Our clients cant really understand how hard is it to cover every area yet thats what we have to do. This is causing ram issues. Also we only have 32 gb of ram because we have switched from Lumion and ram wasn't that effective so we are planning to upgrade to 64 soon. That might be a problem.

When the scene is heavy we cant import a new model during interactive render so we have to stop IR, import then start again but it is getting hard to start because of the heavy scene.

Hi, as an architecture office we usually deal with exteriors. Sometimes a small house, sometimes big residential complex so scale is changing. For now Corona Renderer is my favorite yet we are having problems in big scenes. Also we have discovered Chaos Vantage, seems like we don't have to use interactive renderer with it. Yet we didn't get to chance to work on a new project with Vray and i would like to have your opinions. We have been searching for 2 weeks and looks like everyone is using Corona Renderer for archviz.
