General CG Discussion / Re: Modeling bike handlebar tape
« on: 2020-03-31, 14:39:19 »
After watching a lot of Arrimus 3D youtube videos (I learned a lot of usefull tricks), I did some test with an helix shape, path deform and sweep modifier with a custom shape as profile and custom texture made in Substance Designer. I'm quite satisfied, but now I need to manually adjust the tape in the area close to the brake/shifter lever.

Maybe I'll create a WIP in the gallery section if anyone is interested in bike renderings :)

Gallery / Re: Early morning light

Very cool!
The plants look very realistic, as well as the lighting.

The blue texture on the sculpture seems a bit blurry ( I don't mean the DOF )... the only thing that reduces realism in this image.

Hi, thanks for your comment!
The blue material is made with a mix of procedural textures to replicate the bump imperfections of the ceramic paint. It may looks strange because of the changes in reflection, but is not a blurred texture :)

Also the gold paint is made with a procedural approach, using a Corona AO that recognize the displaced surface and another procedural noise into the AO distance.

During these days of quarantine I can spend more time to enjoy my garden, especially in the early morning when the light is still warm and low.
I made this image inspired by the clover and sculptures made by my dad that you can find in my garden.

The clover is custom made using GrowFX and homemade scans.

Well, modelling a whole bike isn't exactly quick and easy process. The more love you will put in it, the more beautiful it will look :]

Sure. I love bikes, so I'll try my best to make it beautiful.
I started this project in order to improve my modeling techniques.

I think that also the rear derailleur will be a pain to model... :)

You could alternatively make a texture like this (including the stretched part around brake mount) in Substance (or technically just bake the depth map from 3dsMax from single tiled mesh part, which is what I do as I don't use Substance Designer).
And then map it using spline unwrap.

Interesting alternative.
In the meantime I made with substance the displacement map for the tires, so I can try to make also the tape texture.

I'll post some test in the next days.

Thanks for the video! It shows some interesting techniques.
I'll try the step build on surface trick. But it already looks long and painful as much as when I wrapped the handlebar in real life :)

Don't hesitate to tell me other tricks if you have any..

Hi guys, in my freetime I'm modeling my gravel bike and I'd like to know if you have any suggestion on how to model the tape wrapped around the handlebar. See the picture below.
I already modeled the handlebar and some portion of the frame.

Thanks!

That's FTH - thankfully Corona catches it when FTH includes 3ds Max or related processes and warns about it. My suggestion is to always disable it fully. :)

Thanks Marcin!

I think it's time for definite "Setting up Windows 10 for (rendering) work" write-up :- ).

It's getting hard to even remember it all, setting it all from ground up after every re-install is pain.
I was huge fan of Windows 10 originally, but it's becoming far too candy-crush optimized.

I totally agree!
Are you going to write it? :)

Hi guys, do you know any other tips to improve 3dsmax stability and speed with Win10 Pro?

I remember reading something that Windows 10 does when an application crash frequently, and it try to solve the problem running the app in a sort of compatibility mode the next time you open it.

I recently built a new workstation and I want to optimize it as much as possible :)

As far as I know you can achieve something similar using the CShading_RawComponent and selecting the Diffuse component.

Finally the workstation has arrived. Not as portable as initially planned though :)

Ryzen 9 3950X
Asus ROG Strix X570-E Gaming
128GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200Mhz
RTX 2070 Super
WD 500GB NVMe
Crucial 1TB SSD
2 Seagate Barracuda 2TB in Raid 1 for storage and backup
Noctua NH U12A
Coolermaster V850 Platinum
Coolermaster Masterbox TD500

And yes, it has RGB :)

Hardware / Re: Threadripper Builds
« on: 2020-02-07, 16:48:54 »
So the reviews are out and... It's a beast for rendering. Like, nothing comes close to it in terms of fully threaded performance. Didn't expect much else really. Congratulations to the folks over at AMD, they are in a league of their own right now :)

That said, in one of the reviews I found an interesting bit - It appears Windows 10 Pro kind of sucks with 64+ thread systems. I have a 72 threaded one and boy, there certainly are some problems. Now that said, it appears that Windows 10 Pro for Workstations seems to fare better and it does affect the performance in rendering applications too!

Check it out on Anandtech -> https://www.anandtech.com/show/15483/amd-threadripper-3990x-review/5

Seems like Windows segmentation has already begun -_-

Is this problem of Win 10 Pro affecting only 64+ thread systems?

Anyway the performances of the 3990x are impressive!

[Max] Feature Requests / Re: Animation & Scene Parsing
« on: 2020-02-06, 09:41:37 »
This is a request that I made some times ago, and I think they're working on it.
It would be a super improvement, especially for heavy scenes that takes few minutes to parse :)

For my whole life...I can't find anything like that anywhere on internet. If it does, quickly buy two packages for me as well :- ).
Not to doubt your IT company... but are they sure they didn't find "32(4x 8GB)" instead? Because I can't find any 32GB DIMM Dominators.

Anyway, I can't guarantee shit, you're always taking the same risk with memory if it's not on QVL (and nothing is ever there). You can always return it.

Ahah if you want that mysterious kit is available on this online shop (probably it has the same supplier as the shop that will build my pc): http://www.drako.it/drako_catalog/product_info.php?products_id=23495

Anyway the shop is trying to contact his supplier because it looks strange to them too. On Corsair website it doesn't exists.
Still waiting for an answer though..

I'm thinking to go back to the Threadripper build, even if it will cost more, it's way easier to assemble that with 128gb.

*just noticed that the SKU code for that kit on the online shop is the same code for this Vengeance kit: https://www.corsair.com/it/it/Categorie/Prodotti/Memoria/Vengeance-PRO-RGB-Black/p/CMW128GX4M4E3200C16

Probably they're selling the vengeance kit, but with wrong description.

Hi Juraj, I have one last question about RAM compatibility :)
The shop is able to find a kit o 4x32gb Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB DDR4 3.200 Mhz, CL16.
Do you think it will work on the Asus Rog strix x570-E?
I know that you're using the Vengeance kit, I would prefer to buy the same, but seems difficult to find..

Thanks!

I was wondering if you tested also the Corsair LPX kit, or just the RGB Pro kit.
