I just had to do a similar trick that pokoy used. Put a Rayswitcher on the object behind the glass and have only the 'refract override' set to a self illuminated RG or B color. This will stop the self-illum from kicking out any GI. Put a flat black material on everything except the glass and refracted object. I'd save a scene state before doing this.

Aside from all that, is it really that hard to implement this or is it just not a high priority?

After searching around, it sounds like the answer is "you can't". I was able to get it by applying a ray switcher to the chair with a material only in the 'Refract override' no diffuse, self-illum set to 1.0. Apply a flat black material to everything else in the scene, and then render just the glass. It's best to save a scene state before doing all this.

If there is an easier way I'm all ears!

edit: set the self illumination color to 255,0,0 (or whatever) and turn off any post effects in the frame buffer.

Masks in refractions +++

I guess I can make the chair self-illuminate 255,0,0 or something, but is there a more elegant solution? [see attached]

I assume this is a licensing issue, but I thought I'd raise my hand anyway.

I've got $5 I can throw over if that helps :)

Ah excellent, thanks!

I like the multiple region thing, but how about the 'mouse brush region' that vray has. That was always kinda nice to have when needing to checkout how little refractions and such are behaving.

Corona Sun+Sky can't do this yet, so you have to find an HDRI that is taken at blue hour.

Ah good to note. Amazing images on your site btw!

3ds max 21.0, Corona 2. Both in sub-object and top-level mode.

No problem at all, it hasn't come up again since I made the post. Thanks for looking into it though.

Yea that water is great. I like how it has a bit of volumetrics without it looking like a pool that needs to be serviced.

I'm going to google 'blue hour', but do you have a resource off hand that I could read up on that explains the concept? I'm familiar with the golden hour, but blue hour is new to me. It looks great.

@Crazy Homeless Guy, for me it's because the less distance my eyes have to dart back and forth between the viewport and the IR the better. Once I get the look of the shot or material dialed in I switch to the VFB IR maximized on my second monitor.

What would be sweet is if you could navigate with your mouse inside the interactive viewport. Or is this a thing and I don't know about it? (!)

Awesome, yes what you describe is what I assumed. Makes sense to err on the side of accurately displaying what's going on.

So ironically that brings me to another IR thing I found; editing the values in CoronaAO doesn't update correctly in IR. It will make a slight change, but after you stop and restart IR, you can see the real results and it's a *huge* difference.

Thanks for staying on top of this stuff, Corona is a great product!

General CG Discussion / 3ds max on a Chromebook?
« on: 2018-08-28, 19:28:48 »
I'm looking for something small I can take around and noodle on 3ds max with. Are Chromebooks powerful enough nowadays to navigate small 3ds max scenes and a tiny Corona IR viewport? This wouldn't be used for production, think more of a 3D sketchpad.

When I save an .exr out of Corona's VFB with render elements embedded into the file, the alpha channels and RGB mask elements are "off", as in all the information isn't there. Check out the attachments.

For instance, if I put the color picker on green in an RGB mask element, the G value is 191 and you can see some checker transparency in the black.

However when I save out the render elements individually, the images behave as expected. The color picker samples green as 255.

I'm saving these out of Corona 2.0 and opening them in Photoshop 19.1.6 with the EXR-io 1.03 plugin (to allow Photoshop to open embedded .exr files)
